Good morning all

There's a lot going on at the club so here's a bit of an update.

1. Special Meeting

This will be held on Sunday 7 June at 9.30am in the Keith Gaskin Lounge (Clubhouse).

A notice and agenda will be sent out, but there will be reports on the new Strategic Plan, The Course Development Plan and an update on our efforts to sell a parcel of land.

There is a lot to talk about and I am hopeful that many members will take the opportunity to attend.

2. Miramar reciprocal

The committee has agreed to remain in the reciprocal arrangement with Miramar for another six months during which time it is likely that discussions about the four clubs (Miramar, Wainuiomata, Martinborough and Karori) forming a federation may commence.

Members will be kept informed throughout the process.

While there have been glitches in large the experience has been positive for our members.

3. Rumours run rife

There have been rumours running around about the committee revoking Maurice Munro's membership.

At the risk of embarrasing him greatly I need to clarify that at no stage did the committee do this.

Committee last night confirmed that he is a member in good standing of Karori Golf Club.  Maurice has been informed of this.

His efforts around the club have been greatly appreciated and the feedback from our women members is that he is a wonderful coach, someone they feel comfortable working with. Committee is keen to encourage more women to get involved in golf and hopefully to join the club as members.

For now Maurice is not coaching but in time, who knows.  It's in his DNA.  Maybe a break over winter will see renewed interest.

3. Lithium Batteries

The disastrous fire at Te Arai Links has brough this issue in to focus. Committee are checking our insurance policy but we will need need to consider how we can mitigate this risk to the club. We will keep members updated on any actions which we might need to take.

4. Debbie Update: Debbie had her ankle operated on earlier this week and is back home recouperating. It'll be several weeks before she returns to work but we'll keep you posted with her progress.

We're delighted to welcome four new members to Karori Golf Club this week:

9 Hole Women

On Tuesday, the 9 hole women played a par round  on the back nine in lovely autumnal weather. Hilary Newby was the winner followed by Loreen Brehaut and Lindsey Pickering.

18 Hole Women

On a beautiful Tuesday morning a small group of 18 hole women golfers enjoyed perfect golfing conditions.

While there is nothing to report, everyone had an enjoyable day out and we would encourage any other women who have time for golf on Tuesday to join us.

Wednesday Competition

Seventeen golfers set forth in the lightest of drizzle with everything crossed. The weather turned out great and we all returned to the clubrooms in good time. First up was “story time”, followed by the competition results, the raffle, and the chocolate run.

My arithmetic sequence of Stablefords, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 on the first five holes was a novelty which could not compare to the drama of the 1st group off the 5th. Early in the round, one of the two golf carts was stuck in the mud and towed out by the other cart. Then on the 16th, one of the carts rolled backwards into the creek. The other cart set off at high speed to the greenkeeper’s hut and returned with TK in the four-wheel drive with a tow rope. All was set right and the group continued. The second group off the 5th witnessed the drama and also told the story from their perspective. Both groups got extra chocolates.

The golf was won by Patrick Cordue on 40 points from Matthew Everett on 38 points. Balls down to 35 points. John Timperley was nearest the pin on the 4th but there were no twos. In the big event, the wine was won by Terry McAlister with his lucky number 9, just like last week. Patrick was second and happily took the bag of chocolates.

Priorities for the course

The green recovery has been very pleasing following the renovations.

Additional turf management work for the next period of time includes: A preventative fungicide and insecticide treatment on the greens, and seasonal weed spraying through the fairways and rough.

These programmes will help maintain turf health and course presentation heading into winter.

Presentation of Pew from St Mary’s Anglican Church

Our Sponsor Karori Anglican recently presented a church pew that was formerly installed at St Mary’s Anglican Church. The pew is located under the veranda deck and is just the place to sit and check your score or wait for your tee-off. On the pew is a passage from Romans12:12 that we think you will agree reflects a golfer’s thoughts before teeing off.

"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."

The pew also shows signage for Te Kororia, Karori Anglican’s Community Café. Importantly, members can pick up from the shop a 10% discount card on Te Kororia purchases. Thank you Geoff Lee.

We thank and acknowledge the support of the following valued sponsors and ask members to consider them in their purchasing decisions:
