 Late this week...
A bit later than normal this week.
With our manager leaving, Friday Flash is now being produced by a volunteer, in this case me.
Sometimes this will mean a later email being sent as is the case today. It may also be that no Friday Flash is produced at all.
As well as this Club Captain Deane Milne is not doing Captain's Corner regularly and communication from him in future will relate to upcoming events. A big thank you to Deane for his past efforts.
Coming's and Goings...
Sadly, Debbie, our Clubhouse staff member who typically works Wednesday's and Friday's, has badly broken her ankle whilst feed her aninmals. A get well soon card and some goodies were deilvered to her in hospital yesterday, and we're pleased to report she's in relatively good spirits. She's waiting an operation, after which she'll return home and no doubt need several weeks off to recover. Debbie - from all club members, all the best for a full and speedy recovery.
Good Luck to our Inter Club Teams this Weekend
While Division 12 have completed their season the remainder of our teams are in interesting positions.
Division 2 are away to Paraparaumu currently leading their division and looking to gain a handful of away points ahead of their last game (at home next week) to keep them in touch of the trophy this year.
Division 4 who are at home on Saturday to Waikanae, then next Saturday at home to Miramar. Having just been promoted to division 4 they have a strong possibility to remain in Division 4 with a couple of "par" home results.
Division 9 hold an 11 point lead in their division and are at home this week to Miramar. They will be looking for a strong result to further increase their lead. As well as their game this Saturday, Division 9 have a make up game on Sunday against Manor Park. A handful of points will be welcome in this game too.
Best of luck to all our teams this week.

 Men's Vets @ KGC
The power of the Force was felt at the club on Monday when the Wgtn Mens Vets played a Star Wars themed tournament, it being May the Fourth. Despite the KGC greenkeeper jedi knights presenting a course in good condition, Darth Vader was rumoured to have been spotted on the course, spreading his bad vibes, and indeed, there were a few tricky pin positions which may have borne his mark. Unbeknown to players, he also put a hex on 3 holes, creating a ‘hidden holes’ side competition.
Only one player, Karori’s Ian Bates, passed his jedi training by playing to handicap, scoring 36 points to win Div 2 (course handicap 20+) ahead of 2 players on 35 points. Div 1 was won by Sam Hauwaho from Wainuiomata on countback from 2 others, all on 34 points. Winners won a Darth Vader mask, $30 petrol vouchers plus 2 bottles of wine and runners up won a mask, $20 petrol vouchers plus 1 bottle of wine. Prizes were awarded down to 7th place and included Patrick Cordue and Matthew Everett from KGC in Div 1.
Consistent with KGC’s reputation for inclusivity, prizes weren’t all Stars Wars themed, with the winners of the hidden holes (which were holes 6, 11 and 16) winning a Star Trek “Live Long and Prosper” mystery prize. These winners were Sam Hauwaho in Div 1 who scored 8 Stablefords on these 3 holes and Don Galbraith from Mornington in Div 2 who scored 9.
We also had a Buzz Lightyear “To Infinity and Beyond” prize for the player in each division who got furthest towards infinity from the multiple of their stablefords. If a player plays to handicap on every hole, they would normally score a total of 2x18 = 36 stablefords. But the multiple of their stablefords would be 2^18 = 262,144 stablefords. However, if they didn’t score any stablefords on one of their holes, then their multiple would be 0! Sam Hauwaho was the only player to score stablefords on every hole, so he won the Div 1 prize, with over 36,000 points. With no-one scoring on every hole in Div 2, the prize was given to Warren Hall from Mornington who was one of 3 players who scored on 17 holes and had the highest total from the multiple of his stablefords.
The Wgtn Men’s Veterans play usually every second Monday on a course in the greater Wgtn district at a discounted green fee. If you are over 50 and would like to join (annual sub only $20) contact KGC’s WDVGA liaison officer, Jono Wake, on 027-453-8227. May the Force be with you!

9 Hole Women
On Monday our Interclub team played Waikanae at Boulcott's Farm. It was an even tussle finishing with a commendable 2 all draw.
We had a good turnout of players on Tuesday, trying out a different type of competition, with all players allowed to only carry 5 clubs. This restriction did not bother Susan Wright at all, finishing with 22 stableford points. Chris Suggate achieved 21 points so a great result for these 2 ladies.
18 Hole Women
This week the competition was the Molly Turner Salver, a Stableford event open to both midweek and weekend players. The winner was Gail Kirkland playing on Sunday. Just a reminder that any Stableford competition set down for Sunday can be played by any 18 hole woman in conjunction with the Stableford Sunday competition. The next opportunity will be Round 1 of the Pinfold Cup to be played on Sunday May 17.
Progress has been made in the Sullivan Cup with Denise and Fiona through to the next round.

Wednesday Competition
The fun continued in our revamped competition with 19 golfers setting forth in overcast conditions with high hopes. Ian Patience won the Par competition with a wonderful +6 with daylight second. Balls were given down to -1. Mike Suggate was again NTP (red/yellow tees) and Tim Brosnahan had a two on the 6th. Terry McAlister took a nice bottle of wine for winning the raffle with Christopher Pearce taking a pouch of chocolates for second.
All five groups had a “memorable moment” or two to share. It was a tight contest with long putts and chips sunk, even an eagle on the 7th. However, the winning group were 2nd off the 5th with the tale of a nett zero by Fergus McLean on the 2nd – a truly rare event.

 Cart Use Guidance
Our Greens Superintendent and green staff has sole discretion over cart use for safety reasons and to protect the golf course from damage. Cart restrictions may be applied depending on course conditions at the time, including full cart closures. We appreciate members’ understanding and cooperation when these decisions are implemented. Our course differs from many other courses in the region due to the high percentage of silt and clay soils we have throughout the property. These soil types tend to hold water in the upper profile for much longer during wet periods, making the ground far more vulnerable to rutting, cart tracks, muddy trails, and long-term turf damage. Once that damage is done, it can take weeks or even months to fully recover. There are certainly some clubs that allow “members carts only” during wet periods, however our conditions do not always allow for that approach. In many cases, even limited cart traffic can create significant damage and unsafe conditions. For that reason, when the course is deemed too wet or unsafe for carts, the restriction applies to all carts equally. (Cheers TK)
