Thankfully, Wellington's severe weather emergency has passed. Our thoughts go out to members who were impacted by the flooding. Today’s forecast is sunny with light winds, but importantly, tomorrow is expected to be fine with highs reaching 16 degrees. Perfect for the ~70 players entered into our ANZAC Day Tournament! Please note - the course is closed for bookings until 2pm tomorrow to accommodate this event.

As you will see from the photos below, the course has had a significant amount of rain, but has coped remarkably well. You'll notice that the irrigation lake has been topped up and the streams have largely been cleaned out! After a bit more mowing, we'll be back to pristine condition in no time.

Welcome to Ollie Jeffrey who joined as a Full (Age 19 - 25) member this week. We trust you enjoy your golfing experience with us.

Course Closure

I’d like to thank all members for their patience over the past few days while the course has been closed due to significant flooding following the recent storm events. I understand the frustration, but unfortunately the course was simply unplayable under the conditions. The team is working hard to clear water, repair affected areas, and get everything back into shape, and we are pushing to have the course ready for the ANZAC Day tournament. We appreciate your understanding and support during this time. (TK - Superintendent)

Winter Cart Use

The course was closed to cart this week, and TK will make a call about the weekend this afternoon. When it's been wet and cart use is allowed, please stick to the fairways and avoid wet areas. If your ball is in the rough, please park on the fairway and walk to your ball. This will stop wet areas being damaged. Also, if you see reckless cart use please report it to the Clubhouse immediately. Remember, the Course Status on our website (www.karorigolf.co.nz) has the latest information about course closures and cart use.

Miramar Reciprocal

The Miramar Golf Club (MGC) Reciprocal pilot is going well, although it's timely to remind our members of the eligibility criteria. There have been a couple of instances lately where ineligible members have inadvertently used this reciprocal rights privilege:

  • Who does this reciprocal rights benefit extend to? Full Playing KGC members aged 26+ (i.e. this offer is not available to KGC members under 26 years or non-Full Playing membership categories - Midweek, 9 Hole, Summer, Summer Tertiary etc).

  • How often can a KGC member play MGC for free under the reciprocal arrangement? Once per month. Any more frequently than this and members must pay a nominal $20 green fee for 9H or 18H.

  • Why doesn't the pilot extend to KGC members under 26 years of age or non-Full Playing members? MGC's experience with other clubs has been that these groups exploit the low membership joining fee, and use it as a 'backdoor way' of becoming a 'quasi' MGC member (i.e. sidestepping the MGC membership route but primarily playing golf at MGC). This serve's neither club's interests. This reciprocal arrangement is seen as an additional benefit to being Full Playing member.

  •  Can a KGC member aged under 26 or non-Full Playing member still play golf at MGC? Yes, you just need to pay a $20 green fee.

  • Does this extend to practice facilities or golf events at MGC No. Reciprocal rights do not extend to using MGC's practice facilities (unless warming up for a booked round), driving range (once open) or entering golfing events (i.e. Twilight, Interclub, Veterans etc.) KGC members must pay personally for these if a fee is charged.

Missing Dog "Locky"

One of our local Makara neighbors is looking for their beloved Jack Russell, Locky, who has been missing since Easter Sunday morning. Despite an extensive search of their property, the surrounding farm, and the gullies, no trace has been found. The family are asking members to keep a lookout while out on the course or the surrounding boundaries.

About Locky:

  • 8-year-old Jack Russell, very fit and lean.
  • White with brown markings (see photo attached).
  • Very smart and knows the Makara/Karori hills well.

How you can help:

If you are out on the fairways or near the rough and see, hear, or smell anything unusual—or if you have any information about a sighting—please reach out. The family isn't looking to place blame; they are simply desperate for answers and closure for their children. Please contact Judd Baker at 021 024 76764 with any information, no matter how small.
