It was a week of two halves! The weather at the start was awesome - and now this! No carts are allowed until at least Sunday and we're hoping the the course dries out enough over the weekend for Monday's Vets to use carts. School holidays are underway and it's great to see so many juniors out playing. The key messages for this week are:

  • Men's Club Champs Match Play semi-finals this Sunday - good luck to the final few.
  • Hollow Tining - we had the greens hollow tined this week.
  • Slippery Bridges - please walk along the centre metal grating - we had a member injured after slipping on the bare timber recently.
  • Men's Vets on Monday - we're hosting, so the course will be closed for a period. Please book before you turn up.
  • Club Treasurer - we're still looking for a replacement. Please contact the President if you're interested in this role.

Women

9-Hole: We were fortunate once again to have a fine and very calm day to play our Medley 6 competition, a stableford. Even the windmills were motionless! Congratulations to Susan Wright who had a fine round with 21 stablefords.  Second was Jane Campbell with 18 and third Hilary Newby with 17.  While it was heavy underfoot, some good scores were achieved.  The only disappointment was the number of other people’s divots we felt obliged to replace. (Cheers Chris)

Wednesday Club

We got some great weather but conditions were testing. No carts allowed so a turnout of 15 was pretty good; and very well done to the two regular cart users who walked the course. Martin Leung was the winner of the Par competition on +2 ahead of Terry McAlister and Michael Cox on -2. Vinh Phan was nearest the pin on the 4th and there were no twos on any of the holes. Derek Fitzgibbon won the raffle with Michael Cox second. (Cheers Patrick)

What is Hollow Tining For?

This week we had Mexted's hollow tining the greens. But what does it do? Course traffic causes the ground to become compacted. This means drainage is less efficient and the grass’s roots are prevented from absorbing oxygen. Hollow tining allows the compacted turf to expand and air and moisture to be more easily absorbed. Tining also removes accumulated fibre in the grass’s root zone. It allows for the exchange of a poor soil for a better one through top dressing. So in short, it improves all round green health and drainage.

Weather Delays

If there's ever a delay or course closure, the greenkeepers will close the course and update the course status on the Club website (karorigolf.co.nz). They will indicate the likely length of the delay and when the course is expected to reopen. Bookings impacted will then be cancelled. Players with tee bookings will receive a message from DotGolf saying 'an administrator has cancelled your tee booking'. On cold/wet mornings, we ask all golfers to please check the course status and their NZ Golf App before leaving home to avoid a wasted trip out.
