Editorial

Another week comes to an end.  Golf this week with the added spice of a Special Meeting.

One thing I think we need more of are regular updates from our sponsors.  This is something we can work on. Each of them have supported the club and we should take time to profile them to our members.  We encourage our members to patronise our sponsors.  Please let them know you are from the Karori Golf Club if and when you purchase something from/or support them.

The course update indicates the challenges we continue to face every day around the club.  We have a challenging remote piece of land which provides the canvas for the most interesting golf course in the greater Wellington area, and which attracts it's fair share of wildlife and pests.

Club Captain Deane continues to introduce us to new events.  This Saturday some of our members will play the first of a "June" strokeplay challenge over the next four Saturdays.  $5 entry is a modest amount to pay for a competition and it is good to see that we are looking to beef up our prizes while making a contribution to the club from our activities.  Then on Sunday those who enter the Special Meeting Event will play a stableford with variation.  Again should be fun and it will be great to see how it all pans out. $5 entry again.

On the mundane side, the committee meets on Thursday and no doubt will have lots to talk about following the Special Meeting.

Enjoy your weekend.

Search on for "Futures" Coach

Following the recent match committee meeting a search is underway to find the next Coach/Mentor to continue our "Futures" (junior) development at the club.

The Junior program has been transformative, enthusing a younger set of golfers and their parents.

We are keen to keep this as a strong part of our unique club.  A big thank you to Jon Lyall for his leadership in this space.

We will keep you advised of progress as it happens.

Winter Special

We could really use some help to promote this very attractive offer.

The committee is please to announce the following winter special. Tell your friends - they won't get a better deal than this! Available for a limited time only.

Final Reminder - Special Meeting 7 June, 2026, 9.30am in the Keith Gaskin Lounge

This general meeting will be held on Sunday 7 June to report back to members on a number of matters, some of which were discussed at the AGM.

Note: Papers have been circulated.  You should have received a copy of both the Strategic Plan and the Course Development Plan.

There is a lot of information in both reports and we are looking forward to member feedback.  A good turnout would be appreciated.

Deane Milne will also organise a post meeting event so come along and join in.

He's organising an "American Stableford" and 2's.  This should be a bit of fun.  Also, those who wish to can also enter the monthly medal at the same time.

$5 entry fee to cover costs.

What is an American Stableford?

American Stableford

A player records 4 points if a birdie is scored on a hole; 3 points for par; 2 points for bogey; 1 point for double bogey. Points over the 18 holes are totaled; then the player’s playing handicap™ is added to that total. E.g. Total points 42, Handicap 10, Score = 52. Winner is player with most points.

(Please note: It can be confusing keeping your own score.  Simply by recording your score (including pickups correctly recorded) the computer will work out the result.)

Volunteers Wanted

The club needs you.

If you are keen to help us out around the course or the clubhouse please let us know.

9 Hole Women

Despite the very unsettled weather, several women managed to play the first round of the Matchplay trophy on Tuesday. The 4 who have made it through to the second round are Elizabeth Wagner, Lindsey Pickering, Susan Wright and Hilary Newby.

18 Hole Women

Again Weather was the winner this week, though I did see that Raewyn Devlin played on Tuesday and had a very creditible 37 points.

Better luck with the golfing gods this coming week.

Wednesday Competition

Eleven golfers set forth in overcast but dry and still conditions for a Par competition.

The memorable moments discussion was a bit different this week with no spectacular drama or golf shots. Instead, the winning group recounted a “twilight zone” moment where they left the 10th tee, but one member had to return because he had forgotten to tee off!

The golf was won by Terry McAlister on +4 from Patrick Cordue on +2 and Mike Cox on +1. Mike Suggate (as usual) was nearest the pin on the 4th but missed his putt. Patrick had the only two of the day on the 6th. In the raffle, the wine was won by Christopher Pearce and the chocolates by Matthew Everett.

Upcoming Events

  • June Strokeplay Challenge - Played on Saturday's - $5 cash entry per day, daily prizes in each section, overall prize for your best two combined rounds, pick your own tees. More details will come in a Friday Flash.

Course Update – Pest Control and Lake Maintenance

Unfortunately, wild pigs have returned and are once again causing damage to various areas of the golf course. To assist with our pest control programme, cameras have been installed around the course to monitor pig activity.

Please do not touch, move, or tamper with these cameras, as they are an important tool in helping us identify and manage the problem. If you happen to see any pigs while playing your round, please contact me immediately on 022 700 0187 (TK) so we can respond as quickly as possible.

You may also have noticed that the gorse, blackberry, and overgrown manuka around the lake have recently been removed. This vegetation had become excessively overgrown and was beginning to encroach on the water's edge, restricting access to the meter reader and making routine maintenance increasingly difficult.

While I understand that some members may have preferred to be consulted before this work was carried out, decisions regarding course maintenance and management fall within my responsibilities as Superintendent. After assessing the area, I determined that this work was necessary for the long-term health, appearance, and accessibility of the lake environment.

The grasses and lower vegetation that have been cut back will naturally regrow over time, and the area will continue to recover and improve in appearance as new growth establishes

Challenges with Bar Service for now...

It's a big thank you to Jono Wake and Gail Kirkland for staffing the bar recently.

We have made an appointment for a new weekend Bar Manager (to replace Isaac) but until this happens on 20 June we rely on our volunteers.  These are, Jono, Gail and Denise.

If none of these are available we are not able to open the bar.  The Bar Manager needs to be on site at all times that the bar is open.

So the efforts by our volunteers is greatly appreciated.

As an indication of the impact, last Sunday the bar was closed for the entire day.

Most members were very understanding which was appreciated.
