Editorial

Today is Clayton's last day as manager at Karori Golf Club.  He leaves a very strong legacy.  I wish him well and thank him for all his mahi.  Clayton you have been a valued member of our team and we hope to see you around the club again soon.

For now the club's big challenge is to support and nurture the good work started by Clayton and Stephen Wood through the golf academies.

In two years a cohort of young golfers gained skills and confidence and played with credit in the WGI Junior Penants and Watt Cup competitions; as well as beefing up our mens inter club teams.

There is a group below these players who are next cabs off the rank and they will need support too.

I have already met with Jon Lyall to look at next steps and early discussions have been held with Wellington Golf.  Parents and juniors should keep an eye out on this space.

Then we have a need to attract and retain new members.  Our Winter Introductory offer is an attempt to help in this space, and anything members can do to encourage friends and colleagues to join would be helpful.

Looking at tee bookings at other clubs around the greater Wellington region, we have lots of space for people to play golf at Karori and another hundred members would not be greatly inconvenient to members enjoyment of the course.

There is a lot of work to be done around the club now.  We are looking for help from our members while we work out our next steps in attracting and retaining professional management at some later date.

We've been here before.  With good will and support from members, we will get through this one more time.

Right now we should all get behind Denise and give her every support for the next few months.

Also, the appointment of a weekend bar manager is pending to replace Isaac.

Here's hoping I see some of you on Monday at the Kings Birthday Foursomes.  This should be a fun day, and heaven knows we can use one of those right now.

9 Hole Women

On Tuesday the 9 hole ladies played a nett round with Elizabeth Wagner being a very convincing winner with a nett 30. Runner up was Lindsey Pickering from Hilary Newby.

Thursday was Interclub day held at Kapiti against Masteron. The weather was beautiful but the result not so great, with a 3.5 to .5 loss. 2 games to go before the end of a long season.

18 Hole Women

Tuesday was a beautiful day for golf, warm and windless. It was the 5th LGU event for the year and the end of the putting competition. Denise was the winner followed by Helga and Eun. Although she wasn't playing on Tuesday,  Raewyn won the overall putting trophy; having the best 3 of 5 scores.
Just a reminder that any 18 hole women j can pair up and play in the foursomes on Kings Birthday Monday. The women play off the yellow tees, so can form a team to play together. It should be a fun day.

Wednesday Competition

Fifteen golfers set forth in wonderful weather, and we all returned to the clubrooms in good time. First up was “story time”, followed by the competition results, the raffle, and the chocolate run.

Representing the 1st group off 1, my story started on Monday when I witnessed Dave Norton chipping in from 40 feet on the 2nd hole for a two. And, so on Wednesday, on the 2nd hole, I chipped in from forty feet for a two. This memorable moment was awarded the extra chocolates, beating out the 2nd group off the 5th who saw Mark Peck sinking about 40 feet of putts in three consecutive holes.

The golf was won by Terry McAlister on 40 points from Christopher Pearce on 39 points. Balls down to 36 points. Mike Cox was nearest the pin on the 4th but missed his putt. Patrick had the only two. In the raffle, the wine was won by Mike Cox who took the Saddleback Pinot Noir. Bob Cavana was second and happily took the bag of chocolates.

The best story was judged to be from the group containing Patrick and Mike Suggate who both reached the green off the tee on the 4th hoping to each claim a Two in their division. Not to be however as not only did they both miss the put and pay the pig, but found that somebody called "Donald Trump" had claimed a hole-in-one and left the markers in the hole. They were consoled with a ball each for NTP!

The golf was won by Chris Pearce on +4 from Mike Cox on +3. Balls awarded to Jeff Mason and Derek Fitzgibbon each on +1.  The wine was won by Dave Martin with Derek second who happily took the bag of chocolates. Chocolates were distributed to all others to sweeten the day!

Men's Vets - Results

The course was presented in good condition with fast but true greens, and for some of us, problematic bunkers. Great to see Ian Bates and Mike Suggate winning bottles of wine in Div 2, with David Comans unluckily missing out on countback. My appalling round was compensated by winning a bottle of wine in the raffle, as did John Strahl.

Our next event is at Wainuiomata on Monday 8th June – I will call for entries once details confirmed.

Nearest the pin for Div 1 was Ross Cummins who also sunk his putt for a 2. Being the only 2 of the day, he picked up $132 for his efforts.

Nearest the pin for Div 2 was David Hill.

Longest drive for Div 1 was Rodney Orr.

Longest drive for Div 2 was Lloyd Moore.

Autumn brings out the best in the course, but...

You've got to love this time of the year as a golfer.  The course is green and still firm enough to enjoy.  The greens renovations are done and spraying is dealing to fungus and weeds.

It's just great!

So keep an eye out for these things.  Carry a sand bucket and clean up your own divots and any more you may see. It only takes a moment and helps our green staff enormously. It's something we can all do.

Also, pitch marks on the greens.  Fix yours and any others.  Keep or green surfaces in good condition.

And, a reminder that we are always looking out for volunteers.  Just let us know if you can help out occasionally (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz).  We'll add you to our volunteers list.

STOP PRESS

Some huge craters are appearing on the course, often side by side suggesting that the culprit continues to practice the same bad shot that damaged the surface beforehand.

People that cannot replace their divots or repair their pitch marks should find somewhere else to go "hacking".  I use that word advisedly as what they are doing to the course is not golf.

Taking care of our golf course takes but a moment of your time.  Please be considerate of others.
