Good morning All,

Thank-you, Good Bye and Good Luck Stephen Wood Golf Professional

Further on in the Friday Flash Stephen Wood tells us that he needs to resign to pursue his business responsibilities.

We are going to miss him mightily.

He has been a good mentor to a number of our junior members and has run very successful junior academies in terms one and four over the last two years.

The energy around the club from the junior influx has been infectious. Not only juniors joining as members but a number of parents as well.

And, the proof is in the eating.  His young charges have gone from strength to strength and beefed up the club's inter club teams, while also performing well in Junior Pennants and the Watt Cup (Wellington's preeminent junior inter club event) where they finished in a creditable midfield position.

A big thank you Stephen for all you have done for Karori Golf Club.  We wish you well in your future endeavours, and hopefully at some later time we may reacquaint.

Nail Biting Stuff for Inter Club Teams

Our Division 4 and Division 9 inter club teams have a nervous wait this Saturday to learn their fate after the seasons efforts on the links.

Division 4 was promoted last season and they have put up a good showing.  However they are in the "dance of the desperates" with Boulcott's Farm to avoid relegation.  Boulcott have it ahead of them to pick up 9 points away to leaders Waikanae.  It could be said, game set and match, but golf is a funny game.  That result will be watched closely while they teams battle it out in the Tin Cup.

The same could be said for Division 9, although the stakes are a bit different.  Division 9 lead their division by 14 points but there is a good possibility that Waikanae could sneak through if they can garner 14.5 points at home against Miramar. Miramar have struggled this season so if all the Waikanae guys are in good form Division 9 could be pipped at the post for the trophy.

All the same this is a good result for Division 9 who were in serious danger of relegation last season.  They will have their fingers crossed that Miramar manage to get at least 1 point at Waikanae.

A big thank you to captains and players who represented the club on the field this season.  All our teams did the club proud.

Competition News

Hot Scoring in Second Round of Sunday Club Day.

Well done to James Nimmo scoring 43 points on Sunday.  This is a mighty effort of a 13 handicap.  He was followed some way away but nonetheless with respectable scores by Kevin Norquay 38pts, Mark Hussey and John Stubbe on 37pts with another 16 players scoring 30 points or more.

9 Hole Women

Monday was Interclub day held at Te Marua. Our team played Shandon on a beautiful sunny day and came away with a 1.5 to 2.5 loss. The course was in great condition and the greens fast and challenging.

Tuesday was our club day and we enjoyed playing a foursomes. The winners were Hilary Newby and Chris Suggate.

Wednesday Competition

Eighteen golfers set forth for a Par round in a strong cool northerly with everything buttoned up. The weather remained cool, but we returned to the warm clubrooms for “story time”, followed by the competition results, the raffle, and Chocolates. Saint retired after 9 holes with hip pain--we hope returning to the warmth of home has helped Saint. Some others of us should also have retired by the scores at the lower end.

The best story was judged to be from the group containing Patrick and Mike Suggate who both reached the green off the tee on the 4th hoping to each claim a Two in their division. Not to be however as not only did they both miss the put and pay the pig, but found that somebody called "Donald Trump" had claimed a hole-in-one and left the markers in the hole. They were consoled with a ball each for NTP!

The golf was won by Chris Pearce on +4 from Mike Cox on +3. Balls awarded to Jeff Mason and Derek Fitzgibbon each on +1.  The wine was won by Dave Martin with Derek second who happily took the bag of chocolates. Chocolates were distributed to all others to sweeten the day!

Autumn brings out the best in the course, but...

You've got to love this time of the year as a golfer.  The course is green and still firm enough to enjoy.  The greens renovations are done and spraying is dealing to fungus and weeds.

It's just great!

So keep an eye out for these things.  Carry a sand bucket and clean up your own divots and any more you may see. It only takes a moment and helps our green staff enormously. It's something we can all do.

Also, pitch marks on the greens.  Fix yours and any others.  Keep or green surfaces in good condition.

And, a reminder that we are always looking out for volunteers.  Just let us know if you can help out occasionally (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz).  We'll add you to our volunteers list.

Club Pro Resignation

Over the past two years I have had the privilege of offering coaching services at the club, working with Clayton to ensure the club had access to a full range of adult coaching and a comprehensive junior programme. The junior programme engaged 100+ children  with the flow on effect of new members, both junior and adults, and the entry of 3 junior interclub teams this past summer.

Unfortunately, my availability to deliver coaching has reduced to the point where I am now unable to do so with any effect - and both coaching and my other commitments are suffering as I have tried unsuccessfully to spread my time across both.

I will be stepping down from coaching at the club on July 15th. To those that have vouchers or are part way through a series of lessons you will be the priority. I will not be taking any new lessons to ensure this can happen.

If our paths do not cross before July 15th all the best to you all - it has been my pleasure.

Stephen Wood
