Welcome New Members

Welcome to our two new members who have joined the club this week, Tom Healy and Fletcher Watt. We hope you enjoy your golf at Karori Golf Club and we look forward to you getting involved in the various activities around the course and its facilities.

In Praise of Volunteers

It pays occasionally to remember the work our group of regular volunteers do around the course.

We can all appreciate the dramatic from events like storm damage but the general tidiness of the course around our trees for instance is work that is regularly done by volunteers.  The cleanup between holes four and five made a massive difference to the playability of these holes and allowed mowing access.

The new drains around the course involved a huge amount of volunteer help as does the work required when our greens are cored every six months (the autumn coring is just around the corner).

Then there has been the firewood this year too which has raised a good sum of money for our forestry needs.

Our volunteer roster stands at thirty five, we are always seeking others to help.  There are always jobs to be done within everyone's capabilities.  If you want to become one of the team just let TK know at TK@karorigolf.co.nz or by simply turning up on Tuesdays to the clubhouse at 9am.

Marsden Girls College Golf Lessons

Maurice Munro will be conducting golf lessons for Marsden students on the practice range for the next three consecutive Saturdays from 4.00 to 5.00pm. This group has priority of this area during this time.

Note, not all the time will be spent on the range as the group will also be using the putting green.

Gaskies

I want to give a shout out to the "Gaskies" who tee off on Sundays at just on 9am.

This is an all comers group.  It takes its name from former life member the late Keith Gaskin and is designed so that anyone may join in.  The group meets at the picnic table outside the clubhouse at 8.45 for a "card draw".

Note, Gaskies will be the hosts for Diplomats Day this Sunday 15 March.  Extra tee times have been set aside.  If you could advise president@karorigolf.co.nz if you wish to join the diplomats on the day, please do so.

The Diplomats have advised ten entries so there is room for fourteen members to join us.

Come along.

You will be made most welcome.

Other things happening around the club:

Firewood is for sale.  Details in the flyer below. Sales have been brisk and there is still a good supply of dry firewood for your winter needs. Thank you to the volunteers who have split and stored the wood for sale.

Volunteers meet at 9am on Tuesdays to tackle the days chores.  Lunch is provided by the golf club and often golf happens in the afternoon.  We can always use more volunteers so if you have some free time feel free to come along.  Wear sturdy footwear and bring a pair of gloves.  Full training is given before tasks are undertaken.

"Adopt A Hole"

Holes 1, 2, 11, and 16, 17 and 18 are now adopted.

A board will be posted in the clubhouse for people to sign on.

Every little bit helps.

Inter Club This Saturday

There is no inter club this weekend.

Our teams standings after five rounds are as follows: Division 2 in second place on 41 points; Division 4 are in fifth place on 29 points, Division 9 are leading on 49 points, and the "Hillbillies" Division 12 are in 5th place on 30 points.

Division 2, Division 4 and Division 9 will all be at home next week and we are hopeful of solid results for these teams as the season heads to the business end.

Division 12 have a bye next week.

Juniors this Sunday

On Sunday our Watt Cup Team will be playing a Boulcott Farm GC team at Judgeford Golf Club; our 18 hole pennant team will be playing Judgeford Golf Club at Paraparaumu Beach GC, and our 9 hole pennant team is playing Boulcott Farm at Manor Park GC.

Our Watt Cup Team currently lies 5th after three rounds, the 18 Hole Pennant Team are in 6th position, also after three rounds; and our 9 hole pennant team is in 7th position after four rounds.

Go well everyone.

Junior Competition from this Sunday

Our junior members will be playing a competition ($5 entry) each Sunday from this Sunday. Tee times have been set up on the start sheet and those playing must add their names through the DotGolf NZ Booking System before the event. If there are no entries by 9pm on the Friday prior to the event the tee times will be returned to the club for general booking.

Players must pay their entry fee at the shop before printing a card. There will be no set time on 22 March as we are hosting Watt Cup.

Penalty Area - 9th Hole

The gully on the 9th Hole is now penalty area.  A ball that ends up in the gully is very unlikely to be found.

Red penalty pegs will be installed at both entry and exit of the penalty area.

Drop at the nearest point to where the ball crossed the penalty area.

Update: Despite still being a penalty area, the gully on hole number 9 has been mowed this week in preparation for WGI Women's 9 Hole Pennants which is being hosted at Karori on Monday 16 March.

9 Hole Women

It was a beautiful day on Tuesday for the 9 Hole Women to play a gross competition on the Back 9. The leaders were Karen Simcox and Lindsay Pickering both of 60 gross. This pic is of Elizabeth Wagner, Kath Robinson & Julie Wilcox on the 16th tee box. Well done ladies.

18 Hole Women

After three rounds of the Women's stableford, Sin Yee Hailstone and Rose Rigarlsford lead on 31 points, followed by Eun Lee and Helga Karau both on 29points.

With rounds still to go, everything to play for.

Wednesday Club

Fantastic weather on Wednesday again, for the third time in a row.

Twenty-one golfers played in a Par competition. Christopher Pearce was the winner (+1) ahead of Saint Kennach (all square). Balls down to -1. Marcus Henry was NTP (white tees) with nobody playing the red/yellow tees on the green.

There were three twos: Paul Westermayer on the 2nd, Nick Yalden on the 4th, and Mark Peck on the 13th.

Alex Lim won the raffle with Fergus McLean second.

Remember that everyone is welcome to play in the Wednesday competition. Just $5 to enter the competition and to be in the cash raffle. Great prizes for the top performers and everyone gets a chocolate.

Wednesday Twilight

Twenty seven golfers turned up for  Round 22 of Twilight and enjoyed another amazing early autumn evening on the course.

On the podium this week: Andrew Gardner took out first place with 23 stableford points, followed by Russell Dickson and Kate Apperley on 21 points and three came close on 20 points: Geoff Lee, David Eley and Milo Faletolu (paying us a welcome visit from Miramar).

Graeme Couper won the NTP, and Milo claimed the only  'two' this week.

A big thanks this week to Oli Watson on the BBQ, to Brigitte and Karen for the usual lovely salads and to Isaac in the kitchen.

Also announcing: registration opens next week for the final Twilight Prize giving and Ambrose event night on 1 April. This is open to everyone who has participated in Twilight over the season. For the Ambrose comp there will be a registration sheet at the clubhouse bar where you can enter a team of four, or pop your name on the sheet and fours will be created. Registrations will close on Tuesday 31 March.

Meantime see you all next week for another fun evening of golf and dinner!
