Obviously the story of the week has been the storm and consequent clean up.  There is much more from TK later in the Friday Flash. It goes without saying that our staff and volunteers were awesome.  Also, thank you to Denise for feeding and watering the crew on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Brooke for her efforts on Thursday.

Gaskies

I want to give a shout out to the "Gaskies" who tee off on Sundays at just on 9am.

This is an all comers group.  It takes its name from former life member the late Keith Gaskin and is designed so that anyone may join in.  The group meets at the picnic table outside the clubhouse at 8.45 for a "card draw" to determine the playing fours.  This encourages players to team up with someone new each week.  It is a great way to get to know members at the course and a gentle way to become involved in the clubs events, particularly for new and beginning golfers.  Come along.  You will be made most welcome.

Other things happening around the club:

Firewood is for sale.  Details in the flyer in Friday Flash. Please note all sales go to supporting our dead tree eradication and commence a replanting effort.  So buy some firewood and support our "conservation" efforts.

Volunteers meet at 9am on Tuesdays to tackle the days chores.  Lunch is provided by the golf club and often golf happens in the afternoon.  We can always use more volunteers so if you have some free time feel free to come along.  Wear sturdy footwear and bring a pair of gloves.  Full training is given before tasks are undertaken.

We still need course marshals to catch freeloaders and monitor the pace of play.  Contact Deane Milne (clubcaptain@karorigolf.co.nz)  if you can help. Once again training and logistical support is available.

And, "Adopt A Hole"

Now that we have the course getting back in to shape, adopting a hole will help keep our course clear of debris, divots filled and plug marks on greens repaired.  Some of us may be capable of doing some weed eating where needed.  Full training will be given by the staff where necessary.  Get a couple of mates and do this work at your leisure.

Finally, I hope we can get back to enjoying summer golf while the golden weather continues.

Inter Club This Saturday, Juniors this Sunday

Good luck to Division 2 playing Mornington (Tee time 8.03am); Division 4 playing Te Marua (Tee time 8.45am) and Division 9 playing Manor Park (Tee time 9.27am).

On Sunday our Watt Cup Team is playing Shandon at Boulcott Farm, our 18 hole pennant team is playing Boulcott Farm at home (note the WGI 18 hole pennant round is being played at Karori this Sunday.  Tee times have been booked.), and our 9 hole pennant team is playing Judgeford at Royal Wellington.

Go well everyone.

A Message from TK

As Superintendent, I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every one of our volunteers who turned up over the past few days following the severe storm that came through on Sunday and Monday.

The amount of debris, fallen branches, trees and general damage across the course was significant, and it could have easily taken our small team weeks to get things back to a playable standard.

Instead, thanks to your willingness to roll up your sleeves, bring your gear, and put in the hard mahi alongside us, we have been able to clear fairways, cut up fallen trees and get the course back into shape far sooner than expected.

On behalf of the entire greenkeeping team, the boys have asked me to pass on a massive thank you as well — they genuinely appreciate the support, the extra hands, and the positive attitude everyone brought during what could have been a very stressful clean-up. It makes a huge difference knowing we have such a committed group backing the course and the club. Quite simply, the club is able to open this weekend because of your effort and dedication, and that is something you should all be incredibly proud of.

We are very fortunate to have volunteers who care so deeply about the course, and we do not take that support for granted. Thank you again for your time, energy, and continued commitment to keeping our course looking its best.

Nga Mihi

Womens Vets Day - Thursday

Wellington Women's Vets will have their day at Karori on Thursday 26 February.

Tee times are closed from 8.00am until 3.00pm.

The women have asked if they could have a few volunteers to help with spotting on the day?

Please let Jane Campbell know on the club email clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz

All help would be most appreciated.

Women

Good to see a number of our women turn out this week to help with the course cleanup following the bad weather event.  It was really appreciated. See TK's comments and before and after photos.  There sure was a lot to do.

9 Hole Women

Our nine hole interclub team met Royal Wellington at Miramar on 19 February and had a commendable 2 all draw.  Well done. On 6 points the team is in 5th place on the ladder with plenty to play for.

Golf for the rest of the week took a back seat to the bad weather and we are looking forward to golf again this coming week.

Wednesday Club

Not much to say about this week, but a number of us helped out with the course cleanup.  You had to see the damage to believe it. As the saying goes, many hands make for light work.

See you all again this coming Wednesday.

Wednesday Twilight

As with all the other golf this week, the weather was the winner.  Well, the weather even subsided and our course is back ready to play.  As with others a number of our group picked up rakes, drove tractors and generally helped get the course back into shape.

Roll on Wednesday evening so we can once again enjoy good company and good food in relaxed settings.

Phone Lines Down until at least Monday 23 February

The bad weather has brought our phone lines down and they will not be restored until at least Monday next week.  If you wish to book a tee time you will only be able to do so by booking online. Please be patient as this is beyond our control.

Film Production Crew & Vehicles Notice

Te Po Films Ltd plans to use the KGC car park and club rooms as a unit base and crew parking area to assist the filming of a feature film at a property on South Makara Road.

There will be a security guard present 24 hours a day during this time.

On the far side of the car park approximately 40 crew cars will be parked during our filming days. The timings and remaining dates are as follows:

  • Monday 23 February from 7.30am

Additionally, on Monday 23 February Te Po Films has hired the use of the club rooms as an Extras Holding and Processing site.

During the filming, you will still be able to access the golf club at the regular open hours. Te Po Films is working closely with Club Management to reduce disruption.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding this filming, please contact Club Management. Te Po Films thank you for your support and appreciate your co-operation in helping to make Wellington the ‘film friendly’ capital of New Zealand.

Damage to the old Cow Shed

The storm bared its teeth to the buildings too.  The block wall to the north of the cowshed was damaged. A reminder of the awesome power of nature.

Course Marshalls

As mentioned earlier, we are on the lookout for course marshalls.

Sadly there are some out there who think its ok to play for nothing.  As well as that, bad behaviour creeps in (sharing one set of clubs, playing in groups of more than four, disrespecting the course and the like).

Marshalls can assist all golfer to enjoy their game more by ensuring that they hav paid and are well equiped to play and not inconvenience others on the course.

If you have some time availble to give a back a little to our unique club, please let our Club Captain Deane Milne know (clubcaptain@karori golf.co.nz).  There will be training before you are called in to service.

Those who have marshalled in the past report that one of the best spin offs from catching the "no payers" is that many of them end up joining the club as that is by far the cheaper option to paying green fees over time. So it is beneficial and helpful to the club.
