The big news this week is the Miramar Golf Club reciprocal green fee trial. We expect the trial to result in positive outcomes for both clubs (like it has with Wainuiomata GC) - time will tell! We're also shining the spotlight on Ryman Healthcare's Malvina Major Retirement Village - thank you for your continued support. Last chance to put your name forward for a role on the Committee - nominations close tomorrow and can be passed to the Club Manager (via Clubhouse staff) or emailed to clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz. Diverse representation will ensure all members and sub-groups within the Club have a voice.

Other points/highlights for this week are:

  • Give way to Greenkeepers - please only hit when it's safe to do so.
  • Interclub Trials - the 2nd trial is tomorrow, please email clubcaptain@karorigolf.co.nz if you wish to be involved.
  • Volunteer Day Celebration - scheduled for Thu 11 Dec 2025 - details below.
  • Possum Control - the GWRC are about to lay poison in Terawhiti Station to control possums. Please be vigilant and follow warning signs - particularly for children & pets.
  • New Members - A huge welcome to the following members who have joined (or re-joined) us this week:
    • Michael Gimblett (Full 26-31)
    • Griff Miller (Full 26-31)
    • Peter Coop (9H Intro)
    • Jenny Edwards (She Loves Golf 9H Intro)
    • Ben Doig (18U)

I'm away for the next two weeks, so you'll all get a reprieve from the Friday Flash until our Xmas addition on 20 Dec.

Ladies Closing Day

Tuesday 25 Nov was the ladies closing day when the 9H and 18H players combine to play 9H of Russian Roulette followed by lunch and prizegiving.

The 9H winners were:

  • Chris Suggate - 9H Eclectic
  • Lindsey Pickering - Championship & Putting
  • Trish Titcombe - Matchplay
  • Susan Wright - 9H Trophy for most Medley Points, and
  • Jane Campbell - Top Cat Mug.

The 18H winners were:

  • Liz Odell - Grandmother's Trophy
  • Rose Rigarlsford - Pinfold Cup, Molly Turner Salver and Eclectic on Non Club Days Rosebowl
  • Denise Marten - Top Cat Trophy
  • Sin Yee - Hailstone Cathy Fricker Salver
  • Helga Karau - Putting Trophy and Brooker Salver

Also presented on Sunday was the Monigatti Rosebowl for eclectics on own club day which was presented to Brigette Boesnisch-Brednich, much to her surprise.

The 2025 season has now ended so all women need to book in on the start sheet until opening day on Jan 27. The Summer Cup, Stableford and Summer eclectics have been set up on Dot Golf so players need to make sure they select the correct competition for the day they play.

I wish to thank all women players for their help during the year. It's heartening to know that if asked to help everyone says yes. It would be great to have more members join in the Sunday competitions. Looking forward to 2026. (Denise Marten - Women's Club Captain)

Wednesday Club

Fifteen golfers blew the cobwebbs away in a strong NW wind but beat the rain in a Stableford competition on Wednesday. The winner was Christopher Pearce (38 pts) - wine again! from Martin Leung on 37pts (chocs). Ossie McAlister (36), Matt Everett (35) and Terry McAlister (32) each received a ball. Malcolm McAlister was nearest the pin but no twos were recorded so in his absence Terry paid the pig.  Ian Bates scored 4pts on each of the front nine par 3s but it didn't help his total!! Finally keeping it in the family, Ossie drew her own number to win the raffle and Terry drew Malcolm's No for the 2nd prize. Please remember the Annual prize-giving with free food is planned for next Wednesday 3rd December (weather permitting) or alternatively the 10th Dec - you never know you might win a prize!! (Cheers Ian)

Wednesday Twilight

Most Twilighters decided to stay indoors this Wednesday, apart from a band of 10 believers, who just knew that KGC’s microclimate would deliver ‘dry’ conditions for nine holes of golf!

Amazingly everyone won a prize this week. Eric McAuley came in first on 20 stableford points. Four came second with 17 points: John Stubbe; Henry Maurice; Luanne Cockburn and Gail Kirkland. Third place, with 15 points, went to Sam Julian, David Eley and Geoff Lee and finally a couple of ‘most golf’ prizes rounded off the awards ceremony. Eric won the NTP and we had no 'two's this week.

Thanks again this week to David Eley and Eric McAuley on the BBQ and to Karen for a lovely salad. See you all next week for another evening of social/fun golf and dinner. (Cheers Gail)

Miners Arms Bowl

Grab yourself a partner and enter the Miners Arms Bowl - 3 x round competition. This is a four ball better ball stableford competition played off the white tees.  Each team must play a round in December, January and February. Note, you must nominate the day that you are playing before you tee off.  You must play with someone to mark your card. This competition is not loaded in the computer and you will need to write your score on the entry sheet which is posted on the noticeboard in the downstairs foyer. Everyone is welcome to enter.

Volunteer Day Celebration

Get ready to wrap up the year with a bit of mischief! We’re excited to announce our Volunteer Day celebration on Thursday, 11th December 2025, featuring a 9-Hole Greenkeepers’ Revenge Tournament on the back nine—yes, that means expect some creative pin placements and a few cheeky surprises from the team. This day is our way of saying a massive thank-you for all the hard work, support, and elbow grease you’ve put in throughout volunteer days and renovation periods. To help us plan catering, please RSVP (to TK@karorigolf.co.nz) by the 8th of December. We can’t wait to see you all there for some laughs, some chaos, and plenty of golf! (Your Greenkeeping Team)

Give way to Greenkeepers

Just a quick reminder that greenkeeping staff have priority at all times while maintaining the course. There's been a couple of instances recently where golfers have hit up on greenkeepers. Golfers should wait for them to finish their task or move to a safe location before playing a shot. The reasons for this are obvious:

  • Safety: Golf balls can cause serious injury or even be fatal, and greenkeepers on machinery often cannot hear a shouted "fore".
  • Greenkeepers have Priority: KGC policy is that maintenance staff have priority on the course to ensure their safety and allow them to work efficiently.
  • Golfer Responsibility: Golfers are expected to be aware of their surroundings and not play a ball towards staff working on the course. If staff are in range, golfers should wait.

Please use common sense to ensure the course remains safe and in good condition for everyone to enjoy.

Sponsor Spotlight - Malvina Major & Ryman Healthcare

We're well overdue for a shout out to Ryman Healthcare and Malvina Major Retirement Village. They have sponsored Cart 1 (the racey orange & most popular one) for several years now, and we're delighted they recently renewed. Here's what Josie McCrone from Malvina Major has to say...

At Malvina Major Retirement Village, we believe life should be full of connection, fun, and a little adventure! That’s why we’re proud to sponsor a golf cart at The Karori Golf Club – helping members cruise the greens! and climb the rises in comfort and style. Golf isn’t just a game; it’s a way to stay active, meet friends, and enjoy the outdoors. Our partnership with the club reflects what we value most: community, wellbeing, and making every day a little brighter. So next time you see our cart out on the course, give a wave! It’s more than wheels – it’s a symbol of how we’re driving opportunities for friendship and fun, both on and off the fairway. Here’s to great rounds and even greater company!

Club Trundlers

It seems golfers are still helping themselves to trundlers without paying. On a couple of occasions lately, Clubhouse staff have rented out clubs with a trundler, only to discover there's none available. Please, if you wish to use a Club trundler, pay $5 in the shop before you play. There's a sign on the wall under the deck where trundlers are stored. We hope the sign & this message sorts the issue and we don't need to resort to locking them up.

Sponsor Sign Vandalism

Sadly, we've recently had a sponsors sign defaced. Not only is this disappointing behaviour, but very disrespectful to our valued sponsors. The funds raised from sponsors allow us to make important enhancements to our Club which we wouldn't otherwise be able to affford. Let's respect & support those that support us! The committee will take a dim view of anyone discovered to be involved in this type of behaviour. If you see it, please report it immediately to staff.
