We have a new name for the upstairs Clubhouse area - The Keith Gaskin Lounge. President Mark Peck announced this at Gaskies memorial service on Tuesday. Such a fitting tribute to a wonderful club icon. Remember the AGM is on Saturday 06 Dec at 9:30am in The Keith Gaskin Lounge! Key issues are being discussed and voted on. Additionally, all members are encouraged to consider a role on the Committee - diverse representation will ensure all members and sub-groups within the Club have a voice.

Other highlights for this week are:

  • KGC Halberg Foundation Tournament - walk-up entries allowed tomorrow - details below.
  • Hole in One - a huge congratulations to 8 year old Elliott Pegg, for aceing the 6th!

Youngest Ever Hole in One?

On Monday evening one of our younger members, Elliott Pegg, managed a 'hole in one' on the 6th. Here's the story from his father David who was playing with him at the time...

My 8 year old son and I played 9 holes this evening. We came to the 6th and my son hit a great shot to the green. When we walked up, we expected to see it somewhere on the green but couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until he looked in the hole that he found it inside.

Is this the youngest person to get a hole in one at Karori? Norks is doing an article for The Post - so we'll be sure to share it once finished. Congratulations Elliott - that coaching & hard work is paying off!

Miners Arms Bowl

Yep - we have another competition about to start! Grab yourself a partner and enter the Miners Arms Bowl - 3 x round competition.

This is a four ball better ball stableford competition played off the white tees.  Each team must play a round in December, January and February. Note, you must nominate the day that you are playing before you tee off.  You must play with someone to mark your card. This competition is not loaded in the computer and you will need to write your score on the entry sheet which is posted on the noticeboard in the downstairs foyer. Everyone is welcome to enter.

9H Ladies

We had another fine Tuesday and we played a Stableford competition. The winner with 20 stableford was Chris Suggate on a countback from Sue McLaren. Karen Simcox presented Chris with a beautiful bag that she had made. (Cheers Hilary)

Wednesday Club

Fifteen golfers competed in a Par competition on Wednesday. The winner was Christopher Pearce (+1) from Terry McAlister (all square) who beat four others on countback. Christopher was nearest the pin on the 4th, but no twos were recorded on the day. Ian Bates won the raffle with Marcosa Santos second. (Cheers Patrick)

Wednesday Twilight

29 golfers turned up to play at Twilight this Wednesday. Once again conditions were great, and the summer run is on its way!

This week we had four sharing first place with 21 stableford points: Mark Cooney; Russell Dickson; Tim Brosnahan and Warwick Peach. Closely following, Geoff Lee and Barnie Van Biljon came second with 20 points, and  three Twilighters chasing the prize, took out third place on 19 points:  John Stubbe, Karen Simcox and Peter Alkema.

John Stubbe won the NTP and Jeff Mason secured a ‘two’ this week on hole #4. Mark Cooney once again eagled #9 (soon he will truly believe that it is a par 3!!!)

Thanks once again to all our helpers, particularly Pete Alkema for BBQing for everyone this week, and to Karen for a lovely salad. See you all next week for another evening of social/fun golf and dinner. (Cheers Gail)

Possum Control Operation Terawhiti – Cyanide & Brodifacoum Use

The Club has been notified about the likely use of cyanide for a possum control operation which is being undertaken within the RPCP Terawhiti Operational area.

This operation is part of Greater Wellington’s Regional Predator Control Programme (RPCP) and is aimed at protecting our environment from possums, improving the natural biodiversity of the area and reducing threats from bovine tuberculosis to domestic stock.

The main methods of control proposed for the area includes the use of:

  • Encapsulated cyanide (Feratox) pellets in bait-stations or biodegradable blue bait-bags. Cyanide pellets are pea size, dyed green and mixed with prefeed bait.
  • Cyanide Paste (Cyanara50) in bait-stations or applied directly to ground. Cyanide paste is pea sized and dyed green.
  • Brodifacoum 50p cereal baits will be used in Bait stations.

Precautions:

Poison warning signs will be displayed at all main access points to the operational area and the following instructions should be adhered to:

  • Do not touch toxic baits, bait stations, or possum carcasses
  • Supervise children closely
  • Keep dogs under strict control and away from carcasses and bait.

The Keith Gaskin Lounge

"Gone, but forever remembered.”

Much has been said about Gaskie since his death. He has gone, but the legacy he leaves is enormous.  At his memorial on Tuesday, following discussions with Terry Bastion, and with the concurrence of the committee, I announced that to honour his legacy the club rooms would be named “The Keith Gaskin Lounge”. You could hear an audible gasp when I made the announcement. There were silent tears. I’m not going to chronicle line chapter and verse, just suffice to say we may never see another like him. He may be gone, but he will always be in our memories. RIP Gaskie.
