The days are quickly drawing in - remember to turn your clocks back 1 hour on Sunday for the end of daylight savings. We had our last Wednesday Twilight this week - finishing the summer season with a fun Ambrose Tournament. A huge thanks to Gail, Karen, Brigitte, Wayne (& their crew of committed supporters) for bringing Twilight to us again. We successfully hosted Ladies Vets yesterday and saw another mighty effort from our volunteers on Tuesday. Tomorrow we'll have three Inter Club Teams playing (Divs 2, 5 & 9) and on Sunday the final of the Holland Cup. Best of luck to both Nick Mills and Zac Jensen who have made the final. It's also wonderful to see several Summer Members converting to full membership over the last week. Just another indicator that the Club is on the right track.

Ladies

Vets: We hosted Ladies Vets yesterday and the weather was perfect for golf. Local knowledge prevailed with Rose Rigarlsford winning the 18 holes, and Elizabeth Wagner and Susan Wright coming second equal for the 9 holes. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it a successful day, particularly Margaret Peck and Cooper Hardy who did a sterling job in the kitchen. (Cheers Jane).

9H Ladies: We had the qualifying round for the Club Championships on Tuesday. Lindsey Pickering was the top qualifier. We play the first round next week. We also welcomed four 'potential' new members for 9 Hole golf who enjoyed their round. It's wonderful to see new faces coming along. (Cheers Hilary).

Wednesday Club

With several regulars away there was only a field of 17 to play a Par competition on Wednesday. The winner was Malcolm McAlister on +1, beating Alex Lim on all square. Patrick Cordue was nearest the pin (on the 4th hole), but Graham Black had the only two of the day on the 2nd hole. Terry McAlister won the raffle (again) with Saint Kennach second. The red & white raffle was drawn with Peter Wilcox winning the wine and Patrick Cordue winning the golf balls. (Cheers Patrick)

Twilight Golf Prizegiving Wrap-Up – A Swinging Success!

The Twilight Golf season wrapped up with a fantastic evening full of fun, competition, and celebration. Fifty one people turned up for the final event, and the night was nothing short of a hole-in-one!

We kicked off with an exciting Ambrose competition, featuring 12 teams battling it out on the course, including a team made up of our greenkeepers. The scores were impressive, but in the end, "Apperley and Co" took the crown, edging out the "Old Goats" by a narrow margin. Great fun, great competition, and an abundance of golfing prizes (with a dash of wine and some chocolates) made for a perfect season finale.

After a delicious BBQ (and thanks to Doug Calhoun for adding in his famous rhubarb crumble and to Ossie for some delicious chocolates) came the highlight of the evening, Prizegiving!

The winners (all receiving Golf Warehouse vouchers) for the following categories:

Highest cumulative total for the season:

  • 1st place – Gail Kirkland $75
  • 2nd place – Jeff Mason  $50
  • 3rd place – Wayne Cook   $30

Highest average Stableford (Over 20 HCP, minimum 10 rounds):

  • 1st place – Terry McAlister $75
  • 2nd place – Will Lyall  $50
  • 3rd place – Martin Binks  $30

Highest average Stableford (Under 20 HCP, minimum 10 rounds):

  • 1st place – Ossie Santos  $75
  • 2nd place – Tim Brosnahan $50
  • 3rd place – Gail Kirkland (again!) $30

Best Twilight Score for a round:

  • Karen Simcox with an impressive 27 Stableford points (winning a sleeve of golf balls)

Phil Apperley also provided some beautiful hand-crafted wooden bowls for each winner, thanks Phil!

It’s been an incredible season, and we are thrilled to announce that we raised over $5,000 for the club! Some of these funds have already been put to good use, including purchasing a new defibrillator case and first aid box.

A huge thank you to all our players, supporters, and organizers who made this season such a success. We can't wait to see everyone back on the course when Twilight Golf returns in October for another season of fun and friendly competition!

Until then, keep swinging! (Cheers Gail)

Course Volunteers

Another massive thanks to the volunteers who were out in force again on Tuesday. Who knew there was actually a creek bed under the vegetation on the 2nd Hole! Volunteers are making a huge difference to the quality of our course - there were 12 volunteers on Tuesday all working for 3 hours = 36 hours or 1 full week of work! Thank you all so much.  We can always use more volunteers, so if you are available on an occasional basis to help out please email Mark Peck at president@karorigolf.co.nz.

Clubhouse Drains

You've heard of the road to nowhere, but have you heard of the drain to nowhere? It turns out the reason the drains around the Clubhouse weren't functioning is because the water inside them had nowhere to go! When plumbers couldn't help us solve the problem, TK took to the digger and discovered the drain pipe ends in the ground. So, there'll be some minor disruption around the practice green & warm-up nets while we get the problem solved once and for all! Please keep clear of the trench.

Driving Behaviour

The Clubhouse recently received the following message from a South Makara Rd resident. We all drive both ways along this road (and Makara Hill) and none of us want to get hurt. Please put safety first!!

"I am hoping you might be able to help me with something.

I am a frequent user of south Makara road and am hoping you might be able to help me with driving behaviour on that road. Being familiar with the locals out there, it is easy to recognise who is local and who is heading for the golf course.

I and my friends have noticed a decrease in driving quality recently, resulting in many near misses. I am asking if you could remind your members to drive sensibly and keep as far left as possible on the single lane section of South Makara Road, and to keep to the left of the center line, also on the Makara Hill.

If you could help me with this, that would be really appreciated".

Annual Membership Subscriptions

Thanks to all our members who pay their membership subscription fee promptly. It saves our volunteer Committee chasing up debt, and helps us manage our cashflow to keep staff paid and maintain the course standards.

Membership subscriptions are automatically renewed unless the member advises otherwise.  An invoice is submitted to the member detailing the subscription renewal fee and the membership category.  Members are required to advise the Club if they would like to change category at renewal, or if they would not like to renew.

Membership Fees can be paid annually as a single payment prior to commencement of a subscription, or by monthly installments.  Members are obliged to make all payments for the subscription year irrespective of any change in circumstances.

Members paying by monthly installments are required to pay an additional '10% installment fee’ each year which covers the extra administration and cost of cash to the Club.  The installment fee is paid at the start of the subscription year, along with the first installment.  Thereafter payments are due monthly and can be paid by online via the Club website, direct debit, credit card (DotGolf surcharge applies), or in the Clubhouse.
