Tuesday

9 hole Midweek Ladies

Once again we were defeated by the weather and decided to still meet for our traditional Melbourne Cup Day and enjoy a convivial lunch.  It was also a chance for the group to acknowledge the passing of one of the stalwarts of Karori Golf Club’s women’s members, Edna Collingwood. Although Edna retired from the club a few years’ ago, she was fondly remembered by all who played with her, both 18 and 9 holers. It was particularly poignant on Tuesday as Edna was the chief games and general fun organiser for many Melbourne Cup and end of year Christmas celebrations.

Wednesday Competition

Hi All,

Yesterday, sixteen golfers set forth in great weather to compete in a Stableford competition. We had one visitor Arthur Howard from the Shirties. The winner was Patrick (38 pts) just ahead of Marcus (37 pts). Balls were given down to 33 pts. There were no twos. Mike Cox was nearest the pin and had to pay the pig. The cash raffle was won by Christopher Pearce with Arthur second.

Regards

Patrick

Twilight Golf

The Twilight competition had 15 golfers this week (with 4 giving up after 7 holes) - the weather started to change just after 6pm and the southerly wind and showers arrived!

And the golf reflected the weather. Five in second place with 16 stableford points: Doug Calhoun; Geoff Lee; Graeme Couper; John Stubbe and Karen Simcox. First place taken by Matt Everett and Phil Apperley with 18 points.

Pete Alkema won the NTP and had the only '2' - both achieved on hole #4, and most golf was taken out by Sophie Couper.

We also welcomed back Paddy Sullivan and John Haywood from their sojourn in Europe ??

We trialled Gipps Street Butchery's sausages tonight and these are now permanently on the menu!

Big thanks to Isaac for running the kitchen, to Karen for amazing salads and also to our sponsor Richard Reith.

The Course

We have unfortunately developed a spring disease on the greens called ‘brown leaf spot’. Fortunately, TK has caught it early and has managed to spray half the greens but wind has halted spraying the rest. These won’t be treated until next week.

Consequently, the greens won’t be mowed this weekend and will be slow.

We will also be calling for voluteers again for a working bee to work on the course before our weekend of tournaments on 25th and 26th November.  I'll be back in touch and any assistance will be gratefully accepted.

AGM – Save the date

Our AGM will be on the morning of Saturday 9th December. Save this date in your calendars and come out for a round of golf as well. More info to come.

Committee members required

Our club has an excellent committee, a plan for the future and now a very good staff team. But running any enterprise, including a golf club, is becoming more demanding and as we see from the news much more expensive. Without a strong committee the club cannot function.

A number of committee members have served for some time and assisted in the move from a largely volunteer run organisation to one with a much more professional structure. Two of these committee members wish to step down after years of service and this means we need to recruit several more committee members.

We have roles for all, but needs in three areas:

  1. Treasurer. This position requires a person with accounting skills and a working knowledge of Xero would be useful but not essential, along with a strong strategic view on the club and its funding going forward. Marcus Henry, the current treasurer will ensure a longish handover to ensure there is no lack of continuity
  2. Women. The club is very clearly in need of more women, and to help accelerate their recruitments and development we need more women on the committee - joining Denise Martin as Fiona Kearns has stepped down after many years of service
  3. We would also like some younger people, or even a junior representative.

Interested in the challenge/opportunity? Nomination forms are available at the clubrooms, or give Mike Suggate a ring on 021 774471, or email him at president@karorigolf.co.nz.
