Matt’s Message: (Greenkeeper’s memo)

Please remember to take and fill a sand bucket each time you go out. Thanks to those members who make a point of doing this regularly. It really does make a big difference to the recovery of the fairways. Also repairing those pesky pitch marks on the green ensures your ball will run straight and true to the hole. We appreciate everyone doing their bit.

2020 WINNERS - PLEASE RETURN TROPHIES

JUBILEE CUP - CELEBRATING OUR 50TH JUBILEE -

On Saturday 27 March we will be celebrating 50 years to the day of the official opening of the current Karori Golf Club. We celebrated 50 years of the Club’s incorporation in 2018 with a special Jubilee tournament but the course didn’t open for play until 1970 and wasn’t officially opened until 1971. The attached excerpt from Four to the Fore, David Sercombe’s history of the Club through all its incarnations dating back to 1905 (the current club is actually the 4th incarnation of the Karori Golf Club) includes a photo of the then MP for Karori and deputy Prime Minister, Sir John Marshall, and our first President Ted Harcourt, on the first tee officially opening the course.

The tournament promises to be a fun event, open to all current and former members and friends, and will be a great way for new members to meet other members and for former members to revisit the club and hopefully renew their love affair with our course. Entry fee will be $10 if paid before 24 March otherwise $15. We will be playing for what we now call the Jubilee Cup, being the club donated by the Quinn family which was originally won by their father in 1940 during the third incarnation of the Karori Club, and was won by Luke Underwood when we played for it in 2018.

Register for the event either online (preferably) or by emailing the club and if you know any former members or interested players, please let them know. The tournament will be a stableford event played over 18 and 9 holes with both men and women divisions.

Wednesday Club 10 March

23 stalwarts ignored the weather forecast and " sailed " around the course dry with a brisk breeze. Some obviously picked the wind shifts and stormed home to win by a short chip. Saint Kennach won by a bowsprit ( countback) from Satish Chandra with +4 for the par round. Alex Lim won a ball with +1 while Fergus McLean and Chris Pearce each scored a ball for a slam dunk Two. Rounding the buoy for NTP was Keith Gaskin but incurred a penalty donation to the steadily filling pig. Dropping off his foils was Luke Underwood to win the Bunny prize. Gerd Warnke, Dave Ainsworth and Lars Fagerstrom won the spectator ( raffle ) prizes.

Karori/Ohariu Men’s Vets at Te Marua 8th March

Most of the 16 Karori/Ohariu entrants into this latest round of Vets at Te Marua enjoyed the Company, the course conditions and the weather but not the fact that our handicaps were reduced in most cases by 4! Te Marua is not that much easier than our home courses.

Div 1 Winner was David Hill ( Miramar) with 37 pts. Our best was Tim Brosnahan with 36 giving him 4th place on countback.

Div 2 Winner Barry Brice ( Wainuiomata) with 44 pts! Next best was on 37 and our best was Tony Kwok ( Ohariu) with 35 which was about 8th on countback.

The 3 best scores were therefore Tim, Tony and Mike Gaukrodger, Takashi Shigeeda on 34

Two of the four Twos were scored by Howard Livingston and Graeme Sugden ( 9 balls ea). NTP Div 1 was Barry Winfield.
