Friday Flash 5 February

Sunday - Club Day

With such amazing weather we look forward to building up the players who are entering competitions on a Sunday. Look out in the Friday Flash for the events coming up in February. For many of these competitions you just need to ensure you click YES on the computer screen.

Remember that you join us and have your name in by 9am on Sunday for a mixed draw. A great way for new members to Karori to meet new people and playing partners.

Karori Cup

Club Day on a Sunday has shown an increase in participation which is a positive spin, it’s so much fun out there, then reading the results later. The Karori Cup is a year-long event based on Stableford Competition on Sundays. All you need to do to enter is hit "YES" for Club Day. At the end of November we will be calculating the best 10 stableford rounds from each player to find out the 2020 Karori Cup winner.

Matt’s Message to Members (Greenkeeper’s Corner)

Matt is really keen for all members to take a sand bucket out to fill any divot holes left by careless players. As we have a number of visitors and newbies to the game we do need the membership to help with this task. You may notice that work has begun to fill the bunkers on the course to make them mowable depressions. The bunkers will remain GUR until further notice. Thank you for your patience with regards to mowing issues we had over Dec/Jan. Note that the roped off areas are GUR - Matt and his team are working hard to restore some of the fragile areas of the course.

Rules Evening

A very successful evening was held last Thursday for the Rules Evening led by Michael Phelan. It was an informative evening where scenarios were shared and rules explained. There was plenty of time for entertaining quips and humorous anecdotes as well. Thank you Geoff Lee who organised this event and the 28 members who joined us on the rainy evening. It gave all players an opportunity to revise and update their own knowledge of the rules of golf. Soon WGI will advertise training for Level 1 (basic rules training) and Level 2 (for those interested in becoming tournament referees). So if you want to learn more about the beautiful game then keep your eye out for these.

Michael emailed through follow up on a question one of the women put forward following an experience in her interclub play. She said an opponent had refused to mark her ball on the green when asked saying the ball was not on her line of play. I said the refusal would come under Rule one which talks about fairness and spirit of the game. In fact such a refusal is covered under Rule 15.3 and if the ball is not marked as requested before the requestor plays - the offender gets the GENERAL PENALTY - loss of hole in Match Play

Focus on 9 Hole Women Interclub

Karori 9 hole Index Interclub Women’s team played the first round of the 2021 season on Monday at Masterton Golf Club. The ‘Tiger Course’ that the club uses for twilight competitions is a combination of front and back nine holes and this was an interesting mix of holes to play. Dry, leaf littered fairways made for challenging conditions, but the greens were good to putt on. The team of Loreen, Lindsey, Jane and Trish were delighted to win all their matches on a summery day with light winds.

Diplomat’s Day

We have organised with David Hill to host Diploma’s Day on Sunday 21 February with morning tea supplied from 10am and then a multi tee start from 11am. This is a stableford competition and for club members the Grant Keat’s Trophy (nett round) can be played in conjunction with this. It would be wonderful to have a fine field of Karori members to compete in the teams competition against the Diplomats. To enter you can register online or write your name on the noticeboard by Thursday 18 February. This is to allow for a draw to be done and sent out to members.

Autumn Cup

Whilst others are competing on Saturdays in Interclub there is a competition held at Karori for those players not involved. Storming ahead after the first round with an impressive nett 65 is Graeme Crocker. Congratulations on a superb round where it all fell into place.

Miner’s Arms Competition

This is in full swing with some battlers recording some spectacular scoring over December and January. Remember to get your February round in - choosing the best day when you both are in form will be needed to secure this coveted trophy. Check the noticeboard for results.

Nes Beard and Ayers Cup (Stablerford competition only one round)

This competition is for those who are over the age of 50 years. All those cunning and wise players who wish to take part in this competition just need to click on the competition to enter on the day.

COVID PRECAUTIONS

Please keep up the handwashing, the checking in, and all of the other usual precautions around this. The authorities fear people are getting lax, and the events of this week have shown it can resurface very quickly.

SCORECARDS

If you want to avoid printing cards, use the golf.co.nz app instead, it has a scorecard enabled. Simply use the clubhouse wifi to open it and the scorecard before you tee off - then it can operate in offline mode.
