Hi Members
It’s a thrilling issue this week, with photos of Debbie, Anna and the winning Division 9 interclub team captain Kevin Norquay, as well as rival captains Tim Richards and Mark Peck. It’s a real cut-out-and-keep newsletter.
HELP!!!
Wood Clearance
Those playing over the weekend, and in the Club Champs, will notice large cleared areas under trees where piles of wood rounds lay last weekend, collecting errant golf balls.
This is a tremendous tribute to the teams of volunteers who have kept the Ablaze splitter fed with wood, and to the work of Matt and Lukas on the chainsaw and tractor.
We expect to complete the work on Monday (it has taken longer as the wood volumes are greater than expected), after which there will be quite a cleanup of slash and rubbish required, and a bit of repair work mainly from the large bins used for wood transport. And course maintenance can return to normal.
For one last push on Monday, need three strong volunteers Monday morning and three in the afternoon – give Mike Suggate a ring, or a message on 021 774471 mike.suggate@xtra.co.nz if you can help.
MATT’S MESSAGE
The greenkeepers and members have made a huge dent in cutting and removing the wood on our course. It has been a real team effort. Because of the amount of traffic and trucks it has understandably had an impact on the rough.
Repairing the rough area, will be a priority once we are back on a regular schedule. Nothing has been cut/mown this week so apologies for it looking so scruffy. Days have been long for all involved and bodies are sore after all of this physical work but we made a positive difference to the course. Please be patient as we work together on this project.
CLUB STARS: ANNA
Anna on the 9th tee at Karori, on a mid-winter’s day.
Hi! I’m Anna! I’m from Southampton and moved over here in 2008 (although I do have an American accent for some unknown reason). You’ll find me working in the clubhouse at the weekend.
I grew up in the Makara valley on a farm, where we have lived for roughly a decade. I graduated from Marsden in Karori in 2019. I was supposed to be in Canada for my gap year this year however COVID meant that I’m just working this year, till I can go up to Auckland University next year to do a bachelor of nursing.
I hope to one day become a nurse practitioner and am looking forward to becoming a part of the healthcare industry. I have yet to play a game of full sized golf, however I do kick butt at mini golf :)
AND DEBBIE … (we missed her photo out last week, so here it is)
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Here are the brilliant players who remain in the men’s club championships. The semifinals are this weekend. Look at Boyd Kenna go, he just snuck into the seniors and now he’s knocked out the top seed (sorry David!). Eugene Doyle v Erich Bucher should be a thriller in the Intermediate section.

TIN CUP
Div 9 early season skipper Kevin Norquay models the Tin Cup jacket.
The Tin Cup is an annual match played between members of our men’s interclub teams. Last Saturday, 26 players from Division 2 (8), Division 5 (6) and Division 9 (12) competed for the beautiful beige Tin Cup Jacket.
This jacket is worn by the winning captain on behalf of the team and is awarded by the previous year’s winning captain. Its origin lies in the movie Tin Cup, a 1996 American romantic comedy and sports film starring Kevin Costner and Rene Russo.
Using an algorithm carefully designed by Tim Richards and Geoffrey Lee (and too complicated to explain here), the handicap match play results from the individual matches were translated into a team score for each division. When all the scores were added up the results were:
Division 9 – 8.75 – Tin Cup Winner – Captain Kevin Norquay
Division 2 – 7.50
Division 5 – 4.75
Before the jacket changed shoulders from Tim to Kevin, Mark Peck announced and congratulated the Division 5 Player of the Year – Grant Pollard and thanked his team for a successful season, finishing second in Division 5.
Tim Richards then announced his players of the year: Dean Milne, Trevor Brown and Scott McHardy. Tim thanked his players and congratulated the team on its third-place finish in Division 2.
Former President Mark Peck then presented the WGI Capital Cup to Kevin Norquay for winning Division 9 and a bottle of bubbly from WGI to the Division 9 player of the year, Rhys Nimmo.
The prizes for Nearest to the Pin on 2 (no winner), 4 (Tim Richards) and 13 (Grant Pollard) were presented with the Longest Drive on 12 – Division 2 (No winner), Division 5 (Boyd Kenna) and Division 9 (someone really good, sorry we lost the card).
Tim then placed the Tin Cup jacket on Kevin’s shoulders and the Division 9 Team members shared Rhys’s bubbly in a celebration toast and sang their victory song.
Men’s interclub Manager Geoffrey Lee thanked all present for the 2020 Interclub season and advised that planning for 2021 was underway starting with a survey of all men members on Interclub.
He indicated that a fourth Karori Team could be entered next year. Mark Peck concluded proceedings by thanking Geoffrey for his support of Interclub and the Tin Cup event.
NEW WEBSITE GOES LIVE
And this is it http://www.karorigolf.co.nz/home
The new subscription prices have been published on the website and will become active from October 1, as flagged by the president in his letter last month. Memberships prices have been static for a number of years and the increases reflect inflation over the last 8 years and help us to continue to provide members with a top class Golf facility.
Members can now also pay their subs by debit/credit cards and online banking through the website after logging in using their membership number and password. More information will be provided to members over coming weeks on other functionality which will help us run the club more efficiently.
Have a look right here.

SCORECARDS
If you want to avoid printing cards, use the golf.co.nz app instead, it has a scorecard enabled. Simply use the clubhouse wifi to open it and the scorecard before you tee off - then it is able to operate in offline mode.
Try it out in the safety of your own home. It’s much, much easier than putting on the 11th.
Hopefully this will not be for too long, stay safe and do the right thing.
COVID SCANNING
For those of you with smartphones and the Dot.Golf app, please use that to check in at the course. You must still check in or scan the QR Code (it’s that weird jigsaw puzzle thing) as per the Government request of this week
