An extra day this weekend, so plenty of opportunities to play some golf - the course is looking great and the forecast is for fine, albeit cloudy weather, so hopefully you will all get a chance to come on out to the best country course in Wellington. A shop scramble will run on Saturday, being played on a stableford basis, and only $5 to enter. For those of you participating in the Summer Eclectic, you get 3 days this weekend on which you can try and better your scores for those problem holes. Also, for those pairs participating in the Miners Arms and who haven't completed their January round, this weekend may be your best opportunity to do so.

Opening Day Tournament

With most people now back from their summer holidays, we will be holding an opening day ambrose tournament on Sunday 31 January, beginning with breakfast at 8am followed by a random draw teams event at 9. This is a great way to meet other members of the club, have some fun, plus enjoy some golf. It is open to all classes of members, including mid week and 9-hole members, and is only $10 to enter, which includes breakfast. Either add your name to the starter sheet on the notice board in the downstairs foyer, or email/ring your entry into the shop.

Twilight Restarts Next Thursday

This popular and fun event will be restarting after the holiday hiatus on Thursday 27th. This is another fun way to enjoy some golf as well as some convivial social interaction - only $20 for 9 holes of golf followed by a barbecue meal and drink. Tee off from 5.15pm.

Talking about the weather

As you enjoy this balmy weather that we have been experiencing over the holiday period, spare a thought for Anders Holmberg who earlier this month returned home to Sweden and is struggling to adjust to temperatures as low as minus 12. He recently sent us the attached photo of his snow covered apple tree.

Committee Update

The Committee met for the first time this year on Tuesday and can report

  • We have been busy on administrative matters with our insurance policy reviewed and renewed, our building warrent of fitness renewed, and our bar licence renewal in the process of being applied for
  • Our cash position is holding up, despite $40,000 of outgoings this month with the big ticket items being GST return, insurance renewal, and payment for the upgrade to the path from the 11th green to the 12th tee
  • The holiday Grabone special that we have been running for the Pitch and Putt has proved very popular but has highlighted that we need to improve our signage for this facility, with many having come out to our course for the first time and not sure exactly where the PnP is
  • Our playing program for 2016 is almost finalised and should be available to members soon
  • Scotty is preparing a green keepers plan for the year so that he can synchronise their program with the playing events
  • Scotty reports that the leak from the irrigation dam recently dried up, when the lake level fell, but has restarted following recent rains, which suggest the leak may be near the top of the wall rather than through the bottom of the lake, which hopefully will make it easier to repair. The green keepers are appreciative of the engineering experience of Peter Wilcox and Ian Patience in trying to resolve the issue. Until then, the boggy area where the leak emerges will continue to be marked as GUR with a free drop allowed into the neighbouring drop zone
  • Draft minutes of our AGM last month have been uploaded onto our website for those members interested in reviewing them - log into the News page under Members and then select AGM under Committee News in the left hand column to bring up the AGM documents.

New Members

The club warmly welcomes the following new members

  • Gary Hunt
  • Alan Connor
  • Mark Gilbert
  • Michael Graham
  • Myung Lee
  • Daniel Clarke

We look forward to seeing you out on the course - dont hesitate to ring or email the shop if you wish the club to arrange playing partners for you.

Wednesday Club Results for 20 January

Another summer day, bit windy but no rain! The fairways could use some more precipitation, preferably at night when our new gate’s closed.

32 players enjoyed the conditions for the Stableford competition with the winner Don Smith, a graduate from our 9 Hole brigade with 40 points, closely followed by runner-up Tim Brosnahan with 39 points by count back from two Keiths, of whom ‘Gaski’ returned his third consecutive round scoring under his age! Keep it up Keith. Golf balls presented down to 35 points.

No ‘Twos’ hence the Prodrive Sponsors Voucher for ‘Nearest the Pin’ on the 4th whilst claimed by David Norton necessitated the usual $ contribution for missing that crucial putt.

One of our new members, Jose Da Silva Ribeiro who hails from Portugal, followed the example of the famous Portuguese Explorer Vasco Da Gama and rediscovered some of the more interesting parts of our course and received the usual commiseration. The weekly raffle resulted in First No 5 held by Steve Robinson,Second No 19 Kevin Corrigan and Third No 18 Albert Wong.

A team of five 9 holers enjoyed a very relaxing journey round the front 9 hole and dutifully left some of the fab’ sandwiches etc beautifully prepared by Gulnara and Sara, for those golfers who subsequently returned to the clubhouse.

Look forward to more of the same next week...see you there.

Happy golfing

Play safely
