Friday 12th May 2023
Firstly, a warm welcome to all our new members. Thank you for choosing to play your golf at Karori Golf Club – Wellington’s hidden gem!
Twilight Club – A Big Thank You!!
Our amazing members from the Twilight Club donated $1,000 to the club and asked that it be used on new equipment for the kitchen. We purchased a new fly catcher, toaster and the rest of the money went towards a new freezer. Thank you for your very kind donation. It is greatly appreciated.
Release of Kiwi into the Makara Hills:
We were invited, as neighbours, to attend the dawn powhiri at Pipitea Marae to welcome a second batch of 25 Kiwi for release into the Makara Hills where they will join the thirteen released a few months ago. These are apparently thriving. A further 25 will be released next week with the total release planned to reach 450 across the 24,000 hectares that have seen some 4,500 traps reduce predator numbers down to acceptable levels for the kiwi release.
We will be reviewing our clubs trapping programmes to make sure we are doing our bit.

Application of 1080 baits in the South Makara aerial possum control operation:
If you are out playing golf tomorrow, there will be 2 helicopers applying the 1080 bait over Terawhiti Station. Attached to this email are fact sheets in regards to this and also information regarding risks to dogs. There will also be some rangers out walking our boundary to ensure the bait does not come onto the course.
From the Course:
Another very wet week on the course which has hampered the progress of the mowing and spraying that was planned for this week. However, there is nicer weather on the horizon.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday, a green keeper from Royal Wellington will be here to aerate the greens. This will be followed by rolling them. It is hoped that there will be minimal disruption on the course (certainly less than if we were coring the greens). So if you come across our green staff working on the greens, please be patient with them.
Some of you might have noticed yellow spots with black rings round them. This is a disease that greens are susceptible too. We have purchased a fungicide to combat this and will be spraying the greens on Monday 15th May– weather permitting. Please ensure you wash your hands after the round.
Upcoming Event:
Monday 5th June is King’s Birthday weekend. It is also our very own Ryder Cup Match to be played from 10am. The format is that of individual match play and 4BBB within each team.
The teams are made up of New Zealand v Rest of the World. To qualify for the team, you must have been born in that country. So, when you enter, please confirm which team you would like to play for. If we have too many representing one team, if you hold dual nationality, then please indicate this, as you might need to be put in another team to even the numbers out.
The teams will be captained by Mike Suggate (NZ) and Mark Peck (ROW). The match play will be off handicap. There are 3 points to be won for each group – 2 points for the individual match play and 1 point for the 4BBB.
The winning team will be announced in the club house afterwards and be presented with the ‘Royal Bragging Rights Cup’. We are hoping that this will become an annual event.
Dress for the day can be in team colours, national dress (I am sure there are Scotsmen out there with kilts!!)
This is a fun event. Please forward your entries to me at clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz by 1st June so that I can organise people into teams and send out the draw prior to the 5th of June. I will also put a poster and sign-up sheet on the board downstairs.
