What a great turnout we had on Anzac Day, with over 80 enjoying the cooked breakfast put on by the Committee, attending the service to remember those who has fallen in the service of our country, and then playing in our annual tournament in perfect golfing conditions on an excellently presented course. A number of green fee players who came out in the afternoon couldn’t help noticing the fun and camaraderie in the club house and inquired as to whether they could play in the event next year . Well done to everyone involved in making this such a great day. Photos from the day are on our Facebook page.
Club Fitting
Golf irons may all look much the same but we all swing them slightly differently. Swing speed is also a factor, and our height / arm length combination can also impact how cleanly we hit the ball. As a result, if you are contemplating purchasing new clubs, it is strongly recommended that you get them personally fitted. While it may be tempting to pursue an online deal of some sort, whether for new or used clubs, the chances are you wont get the most optimal clubs for you. For those wondering what personal fitting involves, click on this link to an excerpt from last week’s Holden Golf Show which features Mark Leishman being fitted for clubs at the Auckland branch of our prime sponsors, Prodrive. AJ and Shaun have the same facility at their Prodrive outlet at 194 Thorndon Quay as do all the Prodrive shops in NZ. Watch out for further Prodrive excerpts on the show – it usually features about 11pm on Thursday evenings on TV3 but if you cant stay up that late or don’t have the ability to record it, it is also available to watch online.

This Weekend’s Events
On Saturday our women’s Saturday Club are playing Medley 6 – Par while our Mary Alward interclub team are playing Royal Wellington at Heretaunga. No men’s events are scheduled for this weekend but our Div 9 interclub team have a catch up match at home against Shandon and a chance to make up some ground on the rest of the division. Best of luck to both interclub teams.
Bertram Cup
This is our next major event for our men members. Named after one of the original land owners of the property on which our golf club is based, it is a pairs knock out event played on a 4BBB handicap format off the blue tees. A qualifying round will be played on Sunday 14 May with the top 16 pairs going into the first knock out round the following Sunday. This is our main pairs event for the year so start forming your pairs now. An entry sheet will be on the downstairs foyer notice board this weekend.
Recent Results
Last Sunday Wayne Cook and Dominic Milicich fought out the final of the Holland Cup in a tight match that went down to the wire, with Wayne prevailing 2/1. Congratulations Wayne.
The winner of the Anzac tournament was Peter Wilcox with 42 stableford points, ahead of Pete McMillen on 40, the only 2 players to score in the 40s. Our top women contestant was Sally Combly, on countback from Celia Howden, with both scoring 34 stablefords. Celia also won first prize in the raffle. The Foundation Cup, contested by founding members of the club, was won by Keith Gaskin, and in the RSA v non-RSA side competition, the non-RSA members prevailed.
Wednesday Club
KGC Wednesday Club results for 26 April 2017
Playing in somewhat more Autumnal conditions 35 players teed off at 11.00 am to engage not only in the usual Wednesday Stableford Competition but also for the Nes Beard Stableford Trophy for members of 50+ years of age.
Thus the winner for both Competition and Trophy was Mike Cox with 41 points - the game changer being his putt from off the green on the 6th for a birdie providing an extra point or two! The Nes Beard Trophy was presented to Mike by last year’s winner Geoff Lee and along with the Trophy a $25 gift voucher from one of our Club Sponsors Karori New World - well played Mike and thank you New World. Guy Walmsley was only one point away for second place scoring 40 points. Golf balls were presented down to 34 points and recipient of the dubious prize golf ball for having absolutely no luck at all on the day was Doug Calhoun.
There were only 2 TWOs, one by David Shearer whom Chris Peace previously warmly welcomed as a visitor and another by Mike Cox also on the 6th, while Guy Walmsley claimed Nearest the Pin on the 4th and handed over the appropriate fine in the clubhouse for missing the ensuing putt for a two! Can be a wicked game this Golf!
The weekly Raffle this week was won by No 9, holder Patrick who claimed some form of divine intervention concerning a Cockroach and a Praying Mantis! Please refer Patrick! Second was No 37 held by Gerd Warnke who claimed he couldn’t remember winning anything in a WGC Raffle before - and 3rd No 13 held by Guy Walmsley, recompense perhaps for missing that putt !!!
A great day enjoyed by all attending and we, together with the 8 Nine Holers who turned up to eat nearly all the toasted sandwiches, look forward to next week same day same time.
Cheers, DS
Shop Relocation
This has now happened, with just a bit of tidying up to be completed. The upstairs card printing screen is now just inside the stairs leading up from the foyer. The benefits of the shift were immediately realised on Tuesday by being able to open both sides of the bar on Anzac afternoon and by the early tournament finishers who quickly seized the vacated space as the prime sunny spot to enjoy a refreshing after match ale and the following proceedings.
Entertainment Books
We now have 2017/18 Entertainment Books at the shop available for purchase and for pick up by those who pre-ordered. Their cost is $65 of which the club receives $13. They offer tremendous value and very quickly recoup their cost. either purchase directly at the shop, or online via the link that will be sent shortly by separate email.
Happy golfing, play safely,
Your KGC Committee
