Summer is now officially over but don’t you believe it – we currently have the best summer golfing conditions of the year at KGC and with this run of settled weather forecast to continue, we can look forward to many more magical golfing days. If you haven’t been out to the course lately, there are plenty of tee times available this weekend waiting for you. And don’t forget we have Twilight continuing right through to the end of daylight saving – recent evenings have been superb for after work golf.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club are playing White Tee Stableford. There is no interclub this week, although our Div 5 men’s team will be playing some practice rounds tomorrow morning. Otherwise the start sheet is clear for casual golf, with most of the early morning slots already booked. On Sunday it is the qualifying round for the Holland Cup for men. This is played off the blue tees, with the top 16 best nett scorers going through to the knockout matchplay rounds which will be played hole by hole on handicap. If you haven’t already entered, add your name to the start sheet on the notice board in the downstairs foyer or ring/email the club.

Karori Event Centre Tournament

Entries are now open for the ambrose tournament we are holding on Sunday 9th April to help fundraise for the fit out of the new Karori Event Centre currently being built. Start forming your teams and complete an entry form available from the club house shop. The cost for club members is $120 per team, with all the proceeds going towards the fit out. This was a hugely popular event last year and we expect this year to be just the same.

Wednesday Club

KGC Wednesday Club results for 1 March 2017

Wednesday golf seems to be beset with challenges this year. This week for a change we got the weather right but there was a planned power outage so no coffees, teas or scones before we started and we all had to remember how to make out our own cards. A very big thank you to Mark Dinsdale for firing up the barbecue and having some very welcome sausages ready for us when we completed our rounds and for organising the computer, when the power came on at the end of the day, so we could enter our scores and get the day's results.

We welcomed Malcolm Miller who has just joined the club, John Stubbe who joined us on a Wednesday for the first time, and previous member Bob Barker, who was visiting from Martinborough.

36 players contested the stableford competition and although only 7 managed to play to or better than their handicaps, 5 players managed to score twos, 3 of them playing in the same group! The day’s winner, Ian Bates, obviously found everything to his liking, scoring 41 points, getting nearest to the pin on the 4th hole and sinking his putt there for a two. Well done Ian. Runner up with 39 points was David Burton. Other twos were scored by Geoff Lee (13th), Martin Leung (6th), Guy Walmsley (4th) and Patrick Cordue (2nd). Those with 36 points or more won a golf ball as did Don Smith for the "other" prize!

Raffle winners were Martin Leung (9), Victor Diem (25) and Doug Shearer (13).

Seven 9 holers enjoyed the conditions and those succulent “Snarllers” which followed. Their “what, where and how” of their adventures precluded any form of competition result for their efforts so better luck next week.

Nes Beard Trophy

This is the Karori Golf Club's trophy for senior golfers (50 yrs plus), an 18 hole stableford round which will be played for in conjunction with our usual Wednesday competition on 29th March 2017. Open to all men members aged 50 yrs and over.

Harcourts Twilight Thursday 2 March

Another fine evening for Twilight golf enjoyed by all. We had 19 players this week in fine calm weather and we still have four weeks left for those in contention for end of season prizes.

Our winner this week was your scribe (Wayne) on 24 points ($25). Second place was a popular score of 21 points to Brigitte Boenisch-Brednich , Rolf Brednich, Doug Calhoun and Malcolm Miller ($15) We had 3 two’s this week – Graham Black, Alan Thompson (gift wrapped golf ball on its way to you) and Wayne Cook. The consolation prize went to the biggest swinger in Twilight golf – Jo Hurst who scored 27 and 24 points over the last two week, and a “lot” less this week.

We look forward to seeing everyone next week – all club members and visitors are welcome. Tee off between 5 and 5.30pm, followed by a bbq meal.

Interclub Update

Competition in this year’s interclub divisions is proving to be as keen as ever, with final placings likely to be determined by how many away points teams can earn. Currently, after 4 rounds, our teams are sitting as follows:

· Our Div 2 men’s team team, captained by Club Champion Jay Maaka, scored a creditable 6 points, out of the total 15 on offer, away to Te Marua last Saturday, and are currently joint leaders with Mornington on 38 points

· Our Div 5 men’s team scored only 1.5 points away to Ohariu last week and are currently trailing the field on 13.5 points but the team spirit is strong and under the inspirational leadership of team captain Mark Peck are turning out tomorrow morning for some team practice

· Our Div 9 men’s team, captained by Club Captain Carl Beentjes, played at home last Saturday but were beaten by division leaders Miramar 9.5 to 5.5 and currently sit 5th on the table

· Our Mary Alward women’s team also played at home last week and lost 4.5 to 7.5 to Wainui who now lead the table by 0.5 points from Karori and Titahi Bay in what looks to be a very tight division

· Our mid week women’s team are also doing well, having played 2 rounds to date with a 4-2 win against Manor Park and a 3-3 draw against Royal Wellington, to be sitting well poised in 3rd place.

With less than half the rounds having been played so far, there is still plenty of opportunity for teams to improve or cement their position – best of luck to each of them.

Rule Changes Afoot

The R&A and the USGA have unveiled a preview of proposed new Rules of Golf, as part of a joint initiative to modernise the Rules and make them easier to understand and apply. These wont take effect until 2019 but in the meantime golfers around the world are being invited to provide feedback on the proposed changes. A separate email will follow detailing these changes and the process for providing feedback. We also still have plenty of free copies of the current rule books available at the clubhouse shop.

Happy golfing, play safely,

Your KGC Committee
