Matt’s Message: (Greenkeeper’s memo)

Thank you to all those who are helping to make sure divots are replaced and pitch marks are repaired. All it takes is for each person to take a bucket and sand - we need your help with this. As the seasons change we do remind members to take care when walking over bridges - remember to walk in the middle of the bridge on the grate. Another reminder to take care when entering hazards as the ground can be wet and boggy.

As Autumn is already here we ask that those who use motorised carts/motorbikes please make sure you are adhering the advice about where to drive your carts. This is for your safety and also ensures minimising damage to the course. Thank you.

The Greenkeepers will not be coring the greens but will be doing a process called scarifying. This process will take place on the afternoon of Sunday16 May after interclub on 15th. This will not affect play significantly as it is slicing and sanding of the greens. It should take about 6-7 days to settle down. This process is weather dependent so we will keep members informed of any changes to the schedule.

ANZAC Day Tournament Results

After a filling breakfast, courtesy of the KGC Committee members stood outside for the flag ceremony. It was a still morning with a beautiful blue sky above as we stood together and listened to Rhys Nimmo read from Laurence Binyon, From the Fallen. Standing side by side, we showed respect to the sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand military personnel who have died during wars.

Fifty seven players were relishing the opportunity for a game on such a fantastic morning. We thank everyone for their club spirit and generosity with the raffles.

Acknowledgements

You might have noticed recently a street lamp has been installed in the car park, this is on a sensor to automatically light up at night time when someone is in the car park to make it a bit safer as the sun sets earlier and earlier. Thank you to Kevin Turner for supplying the street lamp and organising the installation.

Another thanks again to the Shirties for all of their work recently on installing benches around the course and the stream clearings that they have been looking after.

And a thank you to all the other members who come up and volunteer their time at the club to help improve the course, clubrooms, and car park.

Twilight

The Karori Golf Club twilight season finished with a prize giving evening on April 3. It has been an extremely successful season, with over 80 people enjoying at least one evening of twilight golf since October last year, and there were 40 people who played 5 rounds or more over the season.

We are grateful to our sponsor for the season – Richard Reith, from First National Collective Real Estate – and to all those people who helped out each evening with the BBQ and food, particularly Doug Calhoun, Gail Kirkland, Brigitte Boenisch-Brednich and Karen Simcox.

The prize winners for this season were:

Most Stableford points total

· 3rd, with 301 points = Terry Bastion ($50 Golf Warehouse voucher)

· 2nd, with 306 points = Gail Kirkland ($75 Golf Warehouse voucher)

· 1st, with 325 points = Geoff Lee ($100 Golf warehouse voucher)

Highest average Stableford points

· 3rd, with an average of 18.25 points = Pete Alkema ($50 Golf Warehouse voucher)

· 2nd, with an average of 19.20 points = Tyrone Hall ($75 Golf Warehouse voucher)

· 1st,with an average of 19.50 points = Andrew Gardiner ($100 Golf Warehouse voucher)

Terry Bastion and Doug Calhoun were the most consistent golfers over the season with only 9 Stableford points separating their highest and lowest scores over the whole season.

As you can see, there are some great prizes on offer, and as a bonus, you get to play 9 holes of golf in the evening with a bunch of keen, dedicated golfers!

Any profits from the season are donated back to the club, and this year, due to the popularity of twilight, and the high numbers of players, we have raised $3000, which we are donating to the club, to contribute to the repair and upgrade of the practice nets.

Twilight will start again on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, and is open to both KGC members and others, so we would love to see you there!. The cost is $20, for which you get a round of golf, a gourmet BBQ dinner and the chance to win a prize!

See you all next season!

Course Rating & Scorecards

Wednesday Club

Thirty two golfers enjoyed wonderful autumn conditions and fast greens at Wednesday club. We had two visitors from out of town, both brothers of regular players. The winner on the day was Terry McAlister with 39 stablefords. Jon Lyall was alone in second place with 37 points.

Balls were given down to 34 pts, and also a ball to the player with the toughest round who was Ian Bates (somewhat fatigued from his efforts at the Vets the previous day). NTP was Tim Brosnahan who had to pay the pig.

Twos were scored on the 2nd by one of our visitors Paul Ainsworth and on the 13th by Keith Gaskin. The raffle was kept in-house with John Markham drawing his own number for first prize with Peter Wilcox grabbing second and Graham Presland taking 3rd prize.
