Matt’s Message: (Greenkeeper’s memo)

Please, please do leave any roped off areas alone. The Greenstaff are in the process of reseeding areas on and around the course and in order for a good uptake of grass some areas need time to grow. For example, in the last few weeks the greenkeepers have tried to cordon off areas of the practise putting green (these roped areas have been taken down by green fee players and/or members.

JUBILEE CUP - CELEBRATING OUR 50TH JUBILEE -

On Saturday 27 March we will be celebrating 50 years to the day of the official opening of the current Karori Golf Club. We celebrated 50 years of the Club’s incorporation in 2018 with a special Jubilee tournament but the course didn’t open for play until 1970 and wasn’t officially opened until 1971. The Committee is working hard to ensure this is one of the highlights of the year but to be confident of the commitments being made we need prospective entrants to register early. If you are likely to enter, please do so by early next week. If you are a regular Saturday morning player, note that the course wont be open for general play that day until 3pm.

The tournament promises to be a fun event, open to all current and former members and friends, and will be a great way for new members to meet other members and for former members to revisit the club and hopefully renew their love affair with our course. Entry fee will be $10 if paid before 24 March otherwise $15. We will be playing for what we now call the Jubilee Cup, being the cup donated by the Quinn family which was originally won by their father in 1940 during the third incarnation of the Karori Club, and was won by Luke Underwood when we played for it in 2018. We expect there to be good camaraderie in the clubhouse after play, where attendees will also be treated to a special anniversary cake.

Register for the event either online (preferably) or by emailing the club and if you know any former members or interested players, please let them know. The tournament will be a stableford event played over 18 and 9 holes with both men and women divisions.

Computer Screen use; when getting scorecards and selecting competitions

Dotgolf is having some issues and there are some bugs in the system which don’t allow you to opt out of Sunday Club Competition and choose other tees or other competitions. We are working with Dotgolf to try to get this sorted as it does impact some of our competitions and also we know it is frustrating when you are wanting to get your card when playing off a particular tee. Please be patient with us while this is being worked through. Also if you have issues please know that you can hand your card to the office or leave on desk with a note and Hector/Fiona will be able to enter it using the correct tee and competition.

Thank you.

Cart Hire Reminder

A reminder to all members, if you wish to hire a cart please be sure to book one out in advance and do not take them when you haven’t booked. Recently guests have rung up and booked a cart and when they get here there hasn’t been a cart to give them because others have taken them without booking.

Hole 4 ‘High Tee’ - Hole in One Challenge

Thanks to our sponsor Richard Reith at Collective Real Estate for putting up a hole in one challenge on the 4th hole starting this Saturday 13th March. If you get a hole in one on the 4th hole during a competition you will win an incredibly nice bottle of Jean-Marc Vigreux-Frere Champagne! Competitions include Interclub, Sunday Club Day, Shootout, and Twilight. Good luck to all!

Men’s Interclub

Div 2 had a solid 6-9 loss away at Royal Wellington, any score over 5 away is considered a great effort so well done Div 2.

Div 4 and Div 8 both won their home matches 11.5-3.5 against Manor Park and Te Marua.

Div 11 welcomed Celia to the team but unfortunately lost to Wainuiomata 6-9 but came away with some good individual results.

Good luck to the teams tomorrow, Div 4,8, and 11 are playing at home and Div 2 are playing away at Te Marua

Wednesday Club 10 March

Twenty nine golfers set off at 10.30am planning to be home before 4pm at all costs.

Of those that completed the course (despite numerous wind shifts) the winner, on countback, with 40 stablefords was Paul Hawkes. The unlucky 2nd and 3rd, also with 40 points, were Gunter and Satish. Balls were given down to 37 pts, and also a ball to the player with the toughest round, John McDougall.

NTP was Steve Robinson who has promised to pay the pig next week. Twos were scored on the 4th by Ian Bates and on the 6th by Marcus. The engineers, who were checking out the bridges and culverts on the course, featured prominently in the raffle with 1st prize to Mike Suggate and 2nd prize to Peter Wilcox. Martin nabbed the 3rd prize.

Players returned home in plenty of time to see the America’s cup victory.

Karori/Ohariu Men’s Vets

17 Karori/Ohariu Vets were among 76 Vets who contested 3 Divisions at Wainuiomata on Monday 15th March.

Div 1 (0-16) Winner Steve Needham ( Te Marua) 36 pts, Longest Drive Dave Anderson ( Te Marua), NTP Alex Lim ( Karori)

Div 2 (17-23) Winner Neil Lyons ( Shandon) 39 pts, ( Mike Cox & my opponent-we lost the haggle), Longest Drive Rob Ashby ( Wainui), NTP Jack Tickner ( Boulcott)

Div 3 (24-50) Winner John Troy ( Te Marua) 40 pts, LD Max Flowers ( Boulcott), NTP Bruce Kerr ( Wainui)

Mike Suggate scored one of the 5 Holes-in -two ( 6 Balls)

Only 2 of our 17 entries bettered 30pts Kevin " Bloody" Wilson on 35 (Titahi Bay and friend of Tim Brosnahan!!) and Satish Chandra with 31. KGC handicaps dropped 4 and Ohariu mostly 3 on a course that is not that much easier. The fairways were dry and fast and greens slightly slow and patchy.

Raffles were won by Fergus (2), Bob (2) , Barry Williams and Tony as consolation!

The next Vet outing is at Shandon on Monday 29th March--I will call for entries in the week preceding.
