Its been a busy week this week, with our greens being cored for the first time in over 2 years. It has been a big job, with a trailer load of cores being removed from each green. Some of these are being used to fill in the old bunker in front of the 7^th green which has been GUR for over a year now. Once compacted, we will over-sow this patch and bring it back into play. Overall the cores show healthy grass roots and acceptable thatch levels, confirming that the brown top grass we switched to several years ago now is well established and doing well. The coring has taken longer than planned, and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused to those who haven’t been able to play this week. We are confident though that this short term pain will be worth the long term gain, and we expect the airing and sanding that results from the coring will improve drainage of the greens over winter. Thanks very much to the volunteers who have helped the green keepers this week. All the cores have now been removed from the greens and stockpiled in the 7^th green bunker, under the trees between the 7^thgreen and 8^th tee, and on the nursery area on the left hand side of the 14^th fairway. Please treat all 3 areas as GUR.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Mary Alward interclub team is playing away to Miramar. Non interclub women’s Saturday club are playing Nett. No other events are programmed for this weekend, so plenty of opportunity for a social round, or to notch up another shoot out round. YTD shootout rounds are summarised in the attachments.

Don’t forget that daylight saving finishes this weekend so you get an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning. With clocks being put back an hour, an 8.30 tee time for example this Sunday would have been 9.30 last Sunday.

Last Weekend’s Interclub

Last weekend our men’s interclub teams were in action with the following results

· Div 2 men scored a very good 8-7 away win over top of their table Te Marua

· Div 9 men also had a very good win, beating Boulcott’s Farm at home 11-4

· Our women’s Mary Alward team had an even bigger home win, defeating Shandon 10-2.

Unfortunately our Div 9 men’s match against Martinborough was postponed as a result of one of the team’s cars being involved in a not-their-fault collision in Featherston. Fortunately, although both cars were badly damaged, despite travelling at less than 50km/hr, none of our 3 team members involved, or the driver of the other car, required first aid. We look forward to seeing Keith, Steve and Ngatau back out on the course and thank Martinborough for agreeing to postpone the match rather than enforce defaults.

Upcoming Events

On Monday we were going to be hosting the Wellington Men’s Veterans but with our greens having just been cored, we have pushed this event back to the following Monday which had been kept free as the reserve day. We have therefore now opened the start sheet for this Monday but if you do intend coming out to play, please be mindful of our green keepers who will be re-sanding, sowing and fertilising the greens.

Our next major all members event will be our annual ANZAC Day tournament on 25^th April that will begin with breakfast and a flag ceremony followed by a shotgun start. This is always one of our most popular tournaments so lock it into your diaries now. An entry form is on the notice board in the downstairs foyer – alternatively ring or email the club.

Women’s Tuesday Club

The weather gods were not kind to the midweek ladies on Tuesday. After a few holes we called it a day. While drying off Anita managed to supply lunch to both the 18 and 9 holers. Thank you Anita! We decided not to postpone to the Thursday because of the green coring and sanding

Men’s Wednesday Club

The Wednesday Club kindly forfeited their weekly event this Wednesday to give the green keepers a free run at coring the greens. Last week the weather forced them to postpone to Friday when 25 turned out to compete in the Par competition. Winner on the day was Alex Lim with +7, followed by Mike Suggate and Ian Bates, both on +3. Half the field had a + score, meaning they played better than handicap, no doubt helped by the excellent condition of the course. There were 3 twos: Saint Kennach on the 4^th, Peter Kennedy on the 6^th, and Don Smith on the 13^th.

Team Yip Twilight Golf

Twilight 2018/19 finished on a high last night with an average ambrose, fine food, delicious desserts, and plentiful prizes. The Overall Harcourts Highest Average Stableford for 10+ rounds was won by Peter Nichols on 19.00, Graeme Hoy came 2^nd on 18.93, and Tim Rivers on 3^rd with 18.63. Highest Aggregate went to Antony Kennedy on 404 STB over 22 games, with Jo Hurst on 378 off 21 games, hotly pursued by Wayne Cook on 376, also off 21 games. The highest single round by a male was played by Richard Reith on 27 STB. There was a 3-way female tie by Elizabeth Wagner, Marg McCarthy and Gloria Grayson who all scored 25 STB. This was the first year where a 9-hole eclectic competition was run and the female winner was Jo Hurst on 19.5, followed by Sally Combly on 20.5 and Karen Simcox on21.5. For the men Graeme Hoy and Antony Kennedy shared top spot on 20.5, followed by Richard Reith on 21.0 and Graeme Couper on 21.5. The evening wrapped up with a raffle and the top prize of two nights for two at a B&B in Greytown (thank you Brad Weemes) won by Carey Clements. Marg McCarthy donated a $50 SuperLiquor gift voucher which was won by the Twilight Scribe.
