Today the club house is a hive of activity as we take the opportunity to thank our sponsors by hosting them for an ambrose tournament, with some of our regular Friday players also making up teams. Last Monday was a similarly busy day when all the mid week 18 hole interclub teams came to our course to battle it out for table positions. Well done to our women members who organised it so well, and to the green keepers for presenting the course in such a great condition, and to Sara and Debbie who did the catering.

This Weekend’s Events

With the cancellation of the Jubilee Cup tournament scheduled for tomorrow, there are no events planned for this weekend, other than the final of the men’s Holland Cup on Sunday. As a result there are plenty of tee times available for social golf. Best of luck to Matthew Everett and Geoffrey Lee who will be battling it out on Sunday to become this year’s winner of the Holland Cup.

Last Weekend’s Results

All our men’s interclub teams were in action last Saturday with the following results

· Div 2 men were at home to Boulcott’s Farm, winning 11-4 to climb above them on the position table

· Div 5 men were away to Ohariu where they found it tough going, losing 11.5-2.5

· Div 9 men were at home to Trentham, winning 9-6.

Meanwhile, the Autumn Cup for non interclub men has come down to a 2 horse race, with Ian Patience just ahead of Graeme Crocker.

On Sunday, being 17 March, we ran an impromptu St Pat’s Day competition with a 6 pack of Guinness up for grabs for the player who could score the most stablefords, plus another 6 pack for the winner of a lucky draw of all the entrants. The winner of the most stablefords was recently returned former member (from several years ago) Marcus Henry, on countback from Steve Witkowski and Matthew Everett who all scored 39 points. The winner of the lucky draw was Bruce Tie. Marcus and Bruce, your 4 packs are available for pick up from the bar.

Other results

Congratulations to Graeme Couper and Richard Reith who won the Miners Arms by scoring a total of 146 stableford points from their three 4BBB rounds over summer, just pipping Antony Kennedy and Jo Hurst who fought them all the way with 143 points, and who were the only other pair to break 140. Well done to both pairs.

Congratulations also to Steve Witkowski for winning the men’s Summer Eclectic, with a combined total of 62 for his best hole scores, giving him a net score of 49.45 based on his average handicap index over summer. Steve was the only entrant to break the net 50 barrier. Special mention though needs to be made of runner up Trevor Brown whose total of his best hole scores over the summer was an amazing 13 under par 57, for a net of 51.25, and the only player with a gross score under 60. Well done Steve and Trevor – if only we could score like this all the time!

Upcoming Events

Our next major all members event will be our annual ANZAC Day tournament that will begin with breakfast and a flag ceremony followed by a shotgun start. This is always one of our most popular tournaments so lock it into your diaries now.

During the first week of April our green keepers will be coring our greens. They haven’t been fully cored for a couple of years now , given problematic weather over the past 2 springs when we normally do them, so we have decided to do them at the start of April which is one of our lighter months in terms of major events.

Women’s Tuesday Club

The 9 hole midweek ladies turned out in good numbers to play the 3rd round of the Medal competition on Tuesday. It was a nett game and there were some excellent scores. 3 players scored nett 31. Connie Lee was the winner on a countback from Jane Campbell and Susan Wright. Those who managed 2 or 3 under their handicaps didn't get a look in!

Men’s Wednesday Club

Another perfect day for golf, the weather was hot for Autumn in sunny weather and we played on the magnificent golf course. The fairways are well mowed, greens are trimmed nicely.
We had a bigger turnout with 32 members but only 29 competed because there are players graduating to 9 holers. The day marked the last Wednesday Club game at KGC for a long timer, Tim Allison who is moving to his second retirement place in Napier. One thought that there’s nothing wrong with Wellington weather !!!!
Thanks to the excellent golf course, the winners had fantastic scores. The champion was Marcus Henry, a new member who had only his second game with us. His score was 47 stableford points, closely followed by Fergus with 46. Balls were distributed down to 38 because there were too many players who played better than their handicaps. I got 37 and didn’t get any reward for it.
The bunny prize went to Kevin Corin who it was great to see back out on the course.
The NTP went to Graeme Crocker but didn’t make the putt so needs to donate the pig.
We had 3 Twos on hole 13: Keith Gaskin, Derek Fitzgibbon and Victor Diem.
We all had a good day and look forward to a more peaceful Aotearoa in the future.

Team Yip Twilight Golf

With only one more competitive night to go to close off the 18/19 Twilight season, 26 keen golfers took to the tees last night. It would seem that long lay-offs are conducive to kicking butt on the fairways. Tim “LoveBoat” Rivers returned from a lengthy sea-borne sojourn to take top honours with 25 Stablefords. Being the best Beanbag thrower on his cruise ship clearly assisted with him taking out the NTP on the 3^rd. In second place was Matt “Absentee” Harvey who shared second place with Isaiah “Dog-whisperer” Faletolu on 23. Graeme “Timeless” Hoy and John Wilkinson shared 3^rd place on 22. Jo Hurst, Peter Nichols and Richard Reith shared 4^th on 21, and Carey Clements, Geoff Lee, Tim Brosnahan, and Wayne Cook all scored 20. Most golf played was also shared with Karen Simcox and Marg McCarthy both being rewarded with lollies. Next week is your last chance to improve your chances of winning the Eclectic, Best Average Stableford and Most Stablefords!
