Captain's Corner
Club Report
Good morning Golfers

Is it just me or is it starting to feel like Spring is just around the corner.  It is lighter in the mornings and when the air is still and a bit of sun is out there is a bit of warmth.

Soon the grass will be showing its spring flush and our green staff will be busy beavers keeping and grooming the course for us.

Once again the course will dry off, the ball will roll a bit further and we will all feel like golfers again.

And while it is early days yet, aren't the greens improving well.  Thank you to TK and the crew.

This report is going to be about a couple of things which may make the game more enjoyable for us all and a final primer on the club champs.

1. Placing

I note that whenever a professional golf tournament is run and the course needs a lift clean and place for play to continue that a club length is permitted.  On a number of courses I have played recently this protocol has been observed too.

Obviously the golden rule of 'not nearer the hole' remains but a club length seems reasonable particularly when the object is to protect the course and allow the golfer the opportunity to clean off the ball before the next shot.

From tomorrow placing will be one club length to the nearest point of relief.  Wednesday Competition can be the first group to use it.

I noticed on Sunday that the rough is more consistent than it has been and we can now take off the placing through the green.  However, as the ball is picking up mud still I think it appropriate to institute 'lift clean and drop' in the rough until the course dries out a bit more. There should be a premium on accuracy.  Make sure that you mark the ball before lifting it.  Drop as close to the original position as possible.

So from tomorrow placing will be 1 club length, and in the rough you can lift, clean and drop.

Note: The card talks about 15cm placing.  This new rule will apply as a local rule and it is my view that on the next printing of the card we change this to one club length.  I will put a local rule up on the notice board to remove any doubt.

2. Club Championships

Literally last chance.

To enter the club championships please click on this link: Event registration - Karori Golf Club (hold down the Ctrl button and click link) Entries close at 4pm on THURSDAY 31st August.

You may also contact Robyn (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) or call the club and speak to a person (04) 476 7337.

And a reminder that the Club Championships have been generously sponsored by Gipps Street Deli.  Please patronise this Karori Business for all your delectable delights.

So far sixty golfers have entered.  This is a good effort and the best field we have had for many years.  There is still time to get your entry in.

A draw will be done late on Thursday and will be emailed to all entrants by Thursday evening.

When you arrive for your game your cards will be printed for you.  Call in to the shop to pick these up and to let us know that your are present and ready for your tee time.

The first two rounds double as the stroke play championship.  As a stroke play event no gimmes are allowed.  Everything must be putted out.  If a ball is lifted off the green before being holed out that will disqualify the golfer.  Please observe this.

At the conclusion of your game make sure that you complete your card, check it and sign it and get your marker to counter sign it.  Once you enter your score please drop your cards in the card box in the shop.

We will be using two start tees, 1 & 10.  The draw will inform you which tee you are teeing off.

When you pick up your card please also inform us if you are not available for the match play component of the club champs.  I am aware that a couple of people in the senior division (for example) are only able to play the stroke play championship.  Knowing your intentions will assist us when we make up the match play draw.

At the moment only the Intermediate Division will have a true qualifier with all other divisions playing for seeding in the draw.

The weather for the weekend is looking very settled with light winds.  It should be a great day for golf on Sunday.

I hope to see many of you on the day.

3. Sunday Golf Results

a) Monthly Medal

53 Golfers played the monthly medal which was won by Terry McAlister with a nett 64 from David Wenden and James Philpot both on nett 67.  This makes two Medals for Terry this year.  Top effort Terry.

b) Sunday Club Day

It will come as no surprise that the result of Sunday Club Day was exactly the same as the Medal. Exactly the same golfers and the points respectively were 42 for Terry with David and James on 39.

Best of our women on the day was Ossie with 38 points.

4. New Initiatives

I thought that I would repost this from Friday Flash a couple of weeks ago.

New Green Fee Category, Refer a Friend, Monday/Thursday Special:

  • New Green Fee Category – Karori GC Members’ Guest. This is to apply on any day. If you bring a guest with you, then they will get a reduced green fee. 18 Holes is $20 and 9 Holes is $15.
  • Refer a Friend – Introduce a friend or family member to a new Karori Golf Club membership and receive 2 months free membership. This will apply to all new memberships to encourage young people and more ladies to the club. The 2 months will be added to the referring members’ end date. Just imagine if you referred 6 new members that joined - your next years' membership could be free!!
  • Monday / Thursday Specials – Play 18 Holes for $20 and 9 Holes for $15. Previously this was a standard $30. However, when compared to other clubs in the area, it wasn’t really a special. So hopefully the new price will entice people to make Karori Golf Club their first choice when wanting to play on a Monday or Thursday which are our quietest days.
These initiatives have been well received.  It was a pleasure to see so many new faces in the club house at the weekend.
END
That's all for this week.
Enjoy this good week of weather and I hope to see lots of you for the first round of the club champs.

A big thank you to Robyn, TK and all the crew who have been keeping our course and facilities in top condition for us all to enjoy.
