Friday 11th August 2023

It is nice to be able to start this week’s Friday Flash off on a great note……

HOLE IN ONE!!

alt text

Well done to Chris Pearce who achieved his 1st Hole in One on Wednesday. Chris advised that he used his trusty driver on the 4th hole, watched it bounce just short of the green and rolled up all the way to the hole, giving him and his playing partners a real thrill.

Chris said it was his first hole in one after 62 years of trying. His first words to me were “never give up”! Great advice Chris and thank you for shouting the bar! Your fellow Wednesday Club participants and staff greatly appreciated it.

Meet our Green Staff:

Many of you have asked for a picture of our Green Staff so you can call them by their name when you are out on the course. So here we go…….

From left to right we have William,  22 years old. Loves playing hockey, golf, and spending time with his family. William is currently playing off a 7 handicap and is looking to improve his score once he gets the greens into shape during the spring months. Look out Club champ competitors!!

In the middle we have Matty boy (Matthew Henry) who is 20 years old. Loves playing football, golf, and spending time with his younger brother Isaac, who works in the club house. Matty boy plays off an 18 handicap, and vows to be better than William one day. Bring on the greenkeeper’s competition.

On the right we have TK. 34 years young. Loves diving, fishing, hunting but most of all spending time with his wife and two kids (soon to be 3). TK plays off a 36 handicap as he prefers spending his time chasing the goats and pigs than chasing a golf ball around the course. Says he will still out drive the boys any day!

Please say hi to the team when you are out and about.

Advanced Notice of Course Work:

In the next week or so, TK and the boys will be spraying the tee boxes to eradicate the weeds. The appearance of the tees will look unsightly for a period but will bounce back in the spring with the weeds gone and nice green tee boxes for you to enjoy.

PIG DAMAGE - Update:

Fortunately, we have not had any further damage to the course since Wednesday.

TK has met with a contractor from the council who will be liaising with the manager of Terawhiti Station to determine when they can run dogs in the area to scare the pigs and goats further up the valley. Hopefully this can be done next month.

Please let us know if you see any pig activity while out playing.

New Carts for our fleet:

alt textalt text

Yesterday we had 2 new carts delivered to our fleet. This makes a total of 8 carts available to members and green fee players. Lets just hope that the weather starts to fine up and the course gets dry enough for us to be able to utilise them.

Advanced Notice of Power Outage - Reminder:

Weather permitting, a new transmitter will be fitted on Tuesday 15th August. As previously advised, this will mean there will be no power to the Clubhouse from 9am to approximately 4pm.

Thank you to the members who have provided us with a kettle and gas stove so that we will be able to provide hot drinks on the day. No hot food will be available however there will be sandwiches.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Bar and Catering Price Rise:

From Monday 14th August, food and beverage prices will be slightly increased. This is to cover costs and price increase of ingredients.  The prices are still well below outside agencies but necessary to cover our costs.

RESULTS FOR THE WEEK:

9-hole Midweek Ladies Report:

Four hardy souls braved the cold but dry elements on Tuesday and seemed to enjoy the ISTAS competition.  Elizabeth Wagner won on a countback from Hilary Newby.  Well done all four of you.  The only disappointment was the report of large divots on some of the fairways on the front 9, much larger than members have experienced before.  Please replace your divots!

A reminder that next Tuesday the power will be off, weather permitting, so that Transpower can work on the transmitter close to our drive.  Providing the weather is fine, there will still be golf, sandwiches, coffee and tea available.

Wednesday Club:

TOn Wednesday, twenty-four golfers set off on a sunny day for a Par competition. We had two visitors, Peter Roberts (Otaki) and David Comans. Peter was the winner on +2 and Saint was second on +1 (on countback). Balls were given down to all square. Christopher Pearce was nearest the pin and did not have to pay the pig. There were no twos on the day. Christopher didn’t pay the pig as he had a hole in 1 – his first, which was 62 years in the making! The raffle was won by John Markham with Bob Cavana second and Fergus third.

We currently have 33 entries so there is plenty of room for more. The course is closed in the morning to facilitate this event. So if you were planning on booking a tee time on Saturday, you wont be able to.  So why not join us and come and have some fun and be in for a chance to win a prize.

Please bring a plate for morning tea from 9am. Tea and Coffee will be provided by the Club. Registration from 09:15am with a multi-tee start from 09:30am. Raffles on the day - $2 per ticket or 3 for $5. Donations for raffle prizes welcome.

Booking a Tee Slot: (Ongoing request)

Thank you to all those that are booking and coming into the clubhouse (when its open) to check in.

Please can I ask that you ALL book a tee slot online or by phoning the Club on (04)476-733 or emailing the club on clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz . I appreciate that at times when you look online, there are a lot of free tee slots, so you think there is no need to book. However, the booking system serves as a way of knowing how many people are playing on the course, who is on the course which is important should there be an accident or event and we need to account for everyone.  Thank you for your co-operation.
