Captain's Corner
Club Report
Good evening golfers

The Bertram Cup ended in controversial fashion sadly with the winners being Scott McHardy and Matthew Roche by default.

This was a sad result as the run up matches had produced some epic finishes, but as the saying goes,  that is golf.

From my perspective the one thing I have learned from the Sunday past is the need to have an official present for the final who can take decisions about the match in real time.  Both Club Manager Robyn and I were away for the weekend and I had to work off a report of the circumstances around the match which after review upheld the result.

I do wish to commend Shane Redmond in particular for his no nonsense reply to my queries, even though this confirmed my earlier decision.  I know that Shane is going to become a feature of our competitive calendar and it will not be long before he enjoys the winners circle.

1. Westward Ho

Qualifying is this coming Sunday (16 July).

Eight players have pre-registered and I would encourage those who wish to play to enter on line through the website; or by calling the club (04) 476 7337 and talking to a person.  As Robyn will be away you may email me at clubcaptain@karorigolf.co.nz and I will enter your name.

Many of you will be waiting to see what Sunday will look like and it will be competent for you to enter on the day by selecting the competition before you tee off.  Please note, I cannot enter you after that.

The top 32 golfers will qualify for the match play which will be held over consecutive Sundays with the final being played on Sunday 20 August.  All matches up to the final may be played on or before the date (very limited exemptions) and tee times have been booked on the booking sheet to accommodate the Westward Ho.

Please note, you must putt out.  No gimmees in a qualifying round.

So, don't delay, enter now.

2. Ken and Rose Rigarlsford Event

This event will be held on Saturday the 19th of August, tee time 10am.

Registration will be from 9am at the clubhouse augmented with a cup of tea.

Robyn is chasing a prize package for the event and Rose herself has made a generous donation to the event.  It is her wish that there be no entry fee.

The event is open to all golfers and everyone is encouraged to come along and enjoy a fun day.  There will be raffles too.

The course will be closed until later in the afternoon to facilitate the running of the event.

So get your entry in (once again through the website) or by emailing me at clubcaptain@karorigolf.co.nz or calling the shop and talking to a person (04) 476 7337, or putting your name on the event sheet in the downstairs foyer.

3. Sunday Golf

The weather was the winner this week.

Let's hope for a better week this week.

4. Upcoming golf

a) Wednesday Competition

Be at the clubhouse no later than 10.15am  for the 10.30am disc draw.

$5 pays your entry fee and buys a raffle.

Wednesday Competition is open to all members and affiliated visitors so come along and swell the numbers.

Wednesday Competition is an important part of the Karori Golf Club regularly contributing generously towards the club's facilities.  Every little bit helps.

b) Westward Ho

I've already promoted this earlier.

I hope to see a good strong field of contenders on Sunday.  The more the merrier.

Short and sweet this week.

Please if you have some time available and want to help out on match leave me a message and I will be in touch.  It's not an onerous task but it is a necessary one. (clubcaptain@karorigolf.co.nz)

And, I'm sure we all wish Robyn a well earned rest while she is away catching up with friends and family.

Finally, I am already noticing a number of changes to the playing surface and I know that TK is champing at the bit for spring growth to make inroads into the improvement of the playing surface.  If you see him around the course feel free to say hello.  He'll be pleased to see you.

Other than that, enjoy your golf this week.
