Once again both our Tuesday women’s and Wednesday men’s clubs were able to get out on the course this week, although the women had to brave cold winds and the men had to start in the rain. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t so conducive last Saturday with the Argentinian National Day tournament being wisely called off and postponed until tomorrow. Fortunately the weather tomorrow is looking more promising, as is Sunday.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow we have the course closed for most of the morning for the Argentina tournament. Our early morning regulars need to tee off by 8.17am and be clear of the first 10 holes by 10.30am, but also to be mindful that there will also be foursomes teeing off from the 14th and the 16th tees at 10.30. We have a field of almost 70 playing in the tournament. Entrants need to register and pay ($10) by 10am and to print out their own scorecards, making sure to click on Argentina Tournament when doing so.

On Sunday it is the final of the Westward Ho Shield for men – congratulations and best of luck to finalists Grant Pollard and Antony Kennedy.

Other Upcoming Events

Next month is when we play our Club Championships. On Sunday 1st September men members play their Stroke Play Championship which doubles as the qualifying round for the match play rounds. In the past the stroke play event has been played over 2 rounds but this year it will be played over only one. It is open to all Ordinary Members, including players who are not available for the subsequent match play knockout event. It will be played in 4 divisions, determined by handicap, with the winner being the player with the lowest gross score. Cups are up for grabs in each division, but it is the winners of the match play events, which begin the following Sunday (ie 8th September) who get their names onto our honours board. To be eligible for the match play Club Championship you must play in the stroke play event which will be used to determine seedings for the match play, with the top 16 qualifiers in each division going on to contest the match play. A flyer and entry sheet is on the notice board in the downstairs foyer.

Women’s Tuesday Club

13 hardy 9 hole ladies braved the bitterly cold gale force winds and managed to register, under the conditions, some quite respectable scores in a par game; with Hilary Holm once again taking the honours with -2, with Ingrid Rampton 2nd and Kath Robinson 3rd (both on -3).

Men’s Wednesday Club

It's unusual that a large number of members turned up for the competition despite a wild wet morning. We had the normal number of 27 players who registered. Luckily, the weather forecast was dead accurate. For our first hole, we had torrential rain, but for the rest of the game, it was sunny and balmy weather. It's noted that no one withdrew due to the weather after the first holes.

The winner was the lowest handicapped player in the field, our former greenkeeper, Trevor Brown with a score of 39 points on a handicap of 7. That means his gross score was 74. The 2nd runner up was India Cup winner, Saint Kennach with a usual score of 38 after 24 points in the first nine. The 3rd place went to Alex Lim on 37 points. Others who got a ball: Gunter Karau at 37, Keith Atkinson at 36, Don McCrone at 35, and David Burton, Mike Suggate and Victor at 34 points. So many players had a good game despite the wet underfoot condition.

We had 2 Two's: Don of course and Nobby. NTP went to Martin Leung and he failed the putt due to distance of about 5 metres from the hole so he paid the pig fund.

The bunny prize went to Satish who also beat Arvind in the India Cup. They had a good excuse for making preparations of the last tournament.

Raffle prizes went to the previous Wednesday club management duo of Chris Pearce, Derek Fitzgibbon and Keith Atkinson.

In the end, everybody had a good time and enjoyed the day. Victor
