It may be mid winter but our course is in fantastic condition – playing golf on a calm winter’s day, such as it was for last weekend’s Rigarlsford tournament, doesn’t get any better. If you don’t believe me, come on out this weekend, weather permitting.
This Weekend’s Events
Tomorrow our women’s Saturday Club are playing round 2 of the Pinfold Cup which is played on a stableford basis. On Sunday we were going to hold the qualifying round for the Westward Ho Shield for men but to date we don’t have sufficient entries to warrant this. As a result, we will keep entries open for another week and then do a random draw for the first knock out round to be held on Sunday 28th July. An entry sheet is on the notice board in the downstairs foyer – either add you name to this or ring/email the club. The first 16 to enter will automatically qualify. The Westward Ho is a matchplay on handicap knockout event played off the white tees, and a great way to get in some matchplay practice prior to the club championships which start at the beginning of September.
Rigarlsford Results
What a fantastic day it was last Saturday. Absolutely perfect conditions treated almost 50 entrants in the annual Ken and Rose Rigarlsford Tournament, many of whom were dressed in French national colours in recognition of it being Bastille Day eve. The early morning dew that preluded the sparkling conditions later that morning made for some tricky putting at the start of the event but didn’t seem to bother Steve Witkowski who won the Ken Rigalrsford Cup for men with 40 stableford points, or Elizabeth Wagner who won the Rose Rigarlsford Cup.

Our next all members event is the Argentina National Day tournament….
Argentina National Day Tournament
This popular event has now been rescheduled for Saturday 17th August, with tee off at 11am, followed by Argentinian catering and wines hosted by the Argentinian ambassador. An entry form for this event is on the downstairs notice board – it is open to all members, with an entry fee of $10 to cover the cost of catering and prizes.
Len Kenna
It was with much sadness that we learnt this week of the passing of foundation and life member Len Kenna at the age of 98. Len was a member of the 1967 inaugural committee which brought our golf club to fruition (check him out in the photo of this committee in the stairwell leading up to the clubhouse lounge) and continued playing the game up to last year. Members may also recall the national press and TV exposure he and the club received after he filled in for our Div 2 Interclub team last year. We will remember Len for his jovial and infectious personality and for his passion for golf. He will be much missed by all those who had the good fortune to play alongside him, and our thoughts are with Boyd and the rest of Len’s family at this sad time.

Women’s Tuesday Club
Tuesday's early rain meant that the 9 hole ladies decided to postpone their competition until Thursday. A reasonable number turned up then to play another round of their Medley competition which was nett. The winner was Hilary Holm on nett 35, second was Marion Thompson and 3rd Lindsey Pickering. Once again Anita produced some lovely warming soup which was extremely well received.
Men’s Wednesday Club
We began the day with our remembrance for the passing of the most senior member, Len Kenna. Len became a TV celebrity for playing golf at the age of 96. We all wish to continue playing beyond our 90th birthday!
We had a small crowd with 22 members. Most were still away, some are on holiday and some suffer illness. We need to attract more people joining the competition.
The winner on the day was David Ainsworth with a good score of +3, followed by Saint and Gunter at +1. Balls were distributed to players with even par. NTP went to Paul but he missed the putt. However 3 other players got Twos. The Bunny went to Graeme Crocker after beating Fergus for the prize. Raffles were won by Trevor, Mike and Fergus.
Members are reminded that the India cup will be held on Wed 14 Aug. Finger foods will be provided to mark the occasion.
Bridge Safety
Although our course is in excellent condition, players still need to take care going around it. Our slopes can be slippery when wet or damp, and you need to take extra care when crossing our bridges. Please adhere to these rules when crossing them:
· Enter the bridge carefully – some of them may not be completely level with their foreground
· Cross on the metal grating strips
· Walk don’t run
· Don’t stop on the bridges to look for balls in the creeks
· Don’t try and pass anyone on a bridge
