Despite winter being well and truly upon us, it’s great to see many members have still been able to get out on the course over the past week. Although the course has got its usual wet spots for this time of year, it is both looking good and playing well.

This Weekend’s Events

No events have been programmed for tomorrow, as originally we were intending to hold an all members tournament. We are though hosting 25 visitors from Whanganui who are teeing off between 10.30 and 11 – if you see them around the course or in the clubhouse please make them feel very welcome.

On Sunday it is the first knock out round of the Bertram Cup, the men’s pairs event played on a 4BBB basis. The draw will be circulated this afternoon.

Women’s Tuesday Club

The 9 hole ladies were lucky with the weather again on Tuesday and there was a good turnout. Connie Lee and Lindsey Pickering played the final of the 9 hole Matchplay competition with Lindsey winning a close match.

The remainder played a stableford and Kath Robinson won a ball with her 18 points.

Anita's soup went down a treat back in the clubhouse after play.

Men’s Wednesday Club

24 Keen Wed Club members enjoyed mild but heavy conditions and were not put off by the dead goat at the back of the 6th green!!*

Peter Kennedy scored 37 pts to win by 1 pt from Ian Bates. Don McCrone & Graeme Crocker each had 35 while the following well known "older" members had 34 pts -- Paul Hawkes, Keith Gaskin, Chris Pearce, Derek Fitzgibbon & Martin Leung. Keith Gaskin was one shot off his age -- well done. Paul Hawkes was the NTP (he paid the Pig!) and Keith Atkinson found the going particularly heavy to be the Bunny. Don McCrone won the raffle, Paul Hawkes 2nd and Chris Pearce 3rd. Cheers Ian

* Sara is attempting to rescue its orphaned kid this morning.

Upcoming Events

On Saturday 13th July we will be hosting the Argentina National Day tournament that is put on by the Argentinian Ambassador and open to club members. It will begin with a shotgun start at 11am and will be followed by empanadas and Argentinian wines back in the clubhouse after play. This will be the third year we have hosted this popular tournament and is not to be missed – lock it into your diaries now and watch out for a start sheet on the notice board in the downstairs foyer. Entry fee for members will be $10 to help cover the cost of the catering and prizes.

According to our 2019 program we had intended to hold the Ken and Rose Rigarlsford tournament on 13 July but this will now be held on Saturday 17 August. This is another of our most popular events so lock this date into your diaries as well.

Course Update

Matt is almost certain that the water that has been problematic on the LHS of the 11th fairway for some time is being fed by a spring. Once the source has been located, we will look to try and divert it into the stream that runs between the 11th and 15th fairways.

Members may have noticed a fungus emerging in some of the core holes on the greens. It appears to be a coral based fungus which we suspect has interloped onto our greens via the sand we used following the recent coring of the greens. Matt has sourced a suitable spray to kill it off but is waiting for a forecast that guarantees at least 8 hours of fine weather following the spray application. It will be ok to play straight after spraying but Matt will put up a sign on the first tee when he has sprayed to remind players not to put balls or tees in their mouth and to wash their hands after play.

Welcome Anna

We are very pleased to advise that following Sara’s semi-relocation to the Wairarapa Anna Reed has taken over running the shop and café on Saturdays. Anna lives in Makara and is in her final year of secondary school and has already proved a hit with last Saturday’s regulars and visitors with her egg glazed sausage rolls. Please extend her your welcome and try out her catering if you are coming out tomorrow.

Our current clubhouse staffing roster is therefore now as follows:

Monday: Closed

Tuesday: Anita

Wednesday: Debbie

Thursday: Anita cleaning, Sara shopping

Friday: Sara

Saturday: Anna

Sunday: Debbie

Hole-in-One

Congratulations to Ngatau Hemopo who aced the 6th hole playing with Adrian Porter and Keith Chung on Wednesday morning prior to the Wednesday clubbers. Ngatau followed that up with an eagle on the 12th (ie a two). Well done Ngatau – your name will be added to our honours board when we update it at the end of the year.
