The forecast is looking great for the long weekend so for those of you not going away, hopefully we will see you out on the course. Bookings are light so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting on.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club will be playing for the Shena Allen Grandmother’s Trophy and the Ayres Cup. Nothing has been programmed for the men but for those of you still needing to complete some qualifying rounds for the end of year Top Gun Shootout, this weekend is a great opportunity to do so. The course is in great condition, and starting to give quite a bit of roll, so good scores are beckoning.

Recent Results

Last week men members played for the October Monthly Medal. Winner of the blue division was Wayne Cook with a net score of 71, followed by runner up Mark Peck on 73. There were no entrants in the white division.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

The 9 hole ladies played on Tuesday although we were a slightly diminished group due to ladies travelling, sickness and grand children minding! We played the back 9 and enjoyed the change.

Marie Russell won convincingly with 21 stablefords, 2nd was Hilary Holm on 15 points and 3rd was Trish Titcombe on 14 points.

Men’s Wednesday Club

30 Wednesday members enjoyed early spring conditions with a few "gentle breezes". Two visitors joined us - past member Fiola from Australia and Dennis Cox from Boulcott's Farm. In addition John Timperly made one of his sporadic appearances. The winner was Paul Hawkes with Par +5, followed by Derek Fitzgibbon on + 4 and Ian Bates and Lars Fagerstrom each on +3.

Balls given out down to even to Luke, Geoff, Timmy, Donny & Dennis Cox .The NTP was won by Derek ( he paid the pig) and to demonstrate that there was no bias to the Committee the bunny was Patrick Cordue. Raffle prizes won by Trevor Brown (again), John Markham and Lars Fagerstrom.

Please note the Oteranga Cup (random Par Pairs) will be played on October 31st with the draw at 10-45am and the India Cup on November 7th when hopefully there will be a curry and prizes. Also note a return match against Ohariu is planned for Monday 26th November--more later.

Team Yip Twilight Golf

Fun from the Yellow tees was made manifest for 20 enthusiasts on the 3rd night of the 2018/19 Twilight season. While the full range of tee shots was seen - low, high, sliced, hooked, pulled, shanked, duffed and parabolic perfection - in every case the run was enjoyed by all. John Stubbe smashed the field with his 24 stablefords while at the other end of the competition Jo Hurst got her money’s worth with the most golf. Graeme Hoy played some classic cross-country golf on the 6th and still managed a 3-pointer. A great BBQ, a beer and good company – Twilight at its best.

City Of Wellington Tournament Saturday 10th November

The CoW is our annual major open event of the year, when club members are joined by many of the leading golfers from around the district to compete for a 4 figure prize pool. Please note the change of date from what is in our published 2018 program – we have brought it forward a week to avoid clashing with other major tournaments in the region. This is always a great event, for both men and women, and although the main trophy is played for on a best gross basis, for which only the low handicappers are usually in the running for, there are also prizes for best net scores and most stablefords, for which everyone is in contention. Please lock this date in your diaries now – a flyer with an accompanying entry sheet will go on our downstairs notice board next week.

For men members the CoW is played off the blue tees and this year we expect to have the original blue tee on the 2nd back in action. This tee block has been out of commission for several years due to an overgrown tree blocking the outlook but this has now been trimmed and this week the green keepers have been busy preparing the tee block.

Club Program for the rest of 2018

November and December is a busy period for the club. To help members diarise upcoming events the program for these 2 months is attached.

Toad Rush

Several of our greens have been struck recently with patches of toad rush, a tufty form of grass that is not at all suitable for a putting surface. It is spread by moisture, so we often get an influx of it during spring after a wet winter, with the spores of it attaching to players shoes and thereby onto greens. Matt has tried to eradicate it by spraying the greens but unfortunately without success. The green keepers will therefor try to cut it out manually in the lead up to the CoW.

New Rules

There are a number of rule changes that take effect from 1 January 2019. A good summary of these is contained in this video link, but for chapter and verse, we now have copies of the full set of rules that will apply from next year – if you would like one of these new rule books, simply ask for one at the shop next time you are out at the club.

2019 Rule Changes

Upstairs Card Printer

The upstairs card printer is not setting the ink properly, resulting in scorecards that smudge. We are currently exploring repair and replacement options but until fixed or replaced, members may prefer to print out their scorecard using the printer in the downstairs foyer.

Christmas Functions

It’s getting close to that time of the year when work organisations start thinking about how best to celebrate their year’s success with their staff. A great alternative to simply going out to lunch somewhere is to come out here for a fun round of Pitch and Putt followed by a meal of some sort in the club house. Members are therefore encouraged to suggest to their Christmas function organisers the idea of coming out to the club, stressing that the beauty of the PnP is that it is a fun form of golf that doesn’t require any previous golfing experience.
