It’s over 2 months now since the shortest day – wont be long now before Spring is in the air. Just in time for the Club Champs – men members should be notifying their entries now as they close at the end of next week.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club are playing the fifth and final round of the Pinford Cup, with this round being played on a stableford basis. For men members it is this month’s Monthly Medal, which as usual will be played on a net basis in 2 divisions, with the lower handicappers off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the white tees. Winners of each division will be able to play off for the Top Dog trophy at the end of the year. Also tomorrow, Trevor Brown and Geoff Parr will be squaring off against each other in the final of the Westward Ho – best of luck to both of you.

Course will reopen for member’s carts tomorrow

Although the course has been very sodden these past couple of days, we are expecting a good drying day today. As a result we will reopen the course for carts for members tomorrow, but as usual, please take special care. The same goes for everyone else - our slopes will be slippery and remember, please stick to the grated middles of our bridges when crossing our streams.

Club Championships

Our men’s club championships begin on Sunday 2 September, our women’s 9 hole championships on Tuesday 11 September, and our women’s 18 hole championships on Saturday 6 October.

A flyer for the men’s club championship, along with an entry sheet, has been posted on the notice board in the downstairs foyer. The championships are played in 4 divisions and begin with 2 rounds of stroke play which will be played on Sundays 2nd and 9th September. The lowest gross score over the 2 rounds will determine the stroke play champions for each division. The 16 players in each division with the lowest gross score will qualify for the match play knock out rounds which begin on Sunday 16th, with seedings being based on stroke play rankings. The match play rounds will be played “off the stick” – ie no handicaps – and the winner of each division will be crowned our 2018 club champion for that division, and have their name embossed on our honours board for posterity. So get your entries in now, either by adding your name to the entry sheet on the notice board, or by ringing/emailing the club. Entries close at 4pm Friday 31st August.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

With heavy rain on Monday night the Tuesday women’s club wisely postponed their club day which turned out to be a good call because although it didn’t rain on Tuesday, it was bitterly cold and the course was very sodden.

Men’s Wednesday Club

With a fine forecast 24 Club members and one visitor enjoyed pleasant weather for a stroll playing to par around the course. Only five however overcame the heavy ground conditions and played to their handicap or better. Graham Presland was clear of the field with Plus4. Well done Graham. Martin Leung and Trevor Brown managed plus 1, and Mike Cox & Fergus Mclean played to par. Geoff Lee and visitor Rob Ashby (Mornington--we must do something about his handicap!) also got balls for -1. Trevor was NTP but missed his putt and paid the pig! whilst Graeme Crocker must have really enjoyed his outing in the sun to win the "bunny" prize. Don McCrone retired--hope you have recovered Don. The raffle was won by Gunter Karau ($15), Mike Cox ($10) and Peter Kennedy ($5).

Compressed Air Shoe Cleaner

This has been playing up for a couple of weeks now but Trevor Brown has used his mechanical skills to suss out the problem with the compressor and has ordered a replacement part which hopefully will get it back into operation soon. Thanks Trevor – your efforts and skill are very much appreciated.

Capital Appeal

Many thanks to those members who have already donated towards the capital appeal we launched earlier this week to purchase a replacement gang mower - we are now well on our way towards reaching our target.

If you would like to make a donation the easiest way to do so is by direct credit to our bank account:

06-0501-0432338-00

quoting your name or membership number so that we can arrange for a receipt to be sent to you. However, cheques will also be accepted, as will cash or EFTPOS donations at the shop.

Flukey Hole-in-One

It is traditional that a player scoring a hole-in-one shouts back in the bar for his fellow players on the day (and indeed, for holes-in-one scored on our course, the club will contribute $100 towards the shout). For this particular hole-in-one, the playing partner I think deserves an extra whisky or two. Click on the attachment to see how it was scored.

New Sponsors Signs

We have a new sponsor for the 7th hole – building contractors Capital Construction Ltd. Capital Construction was established in Wellington in 1994 and over the last twenty years have carried out new construction, refurbishment construction, interior fitouts, structural strengthening, leaky building remediation works, new housing, alterations and any construction works that are required to be driven by a company that respects program and quality of workmanship. One of their directors is club member Steve Witkowski. Here is their sign on the 7th tee, and click on the link to connect to their website:
