It’s getting close to the start of our Club Championships – hopefully everyone is getting their games ready for the opportunity to get their name on our honours board – see more details below.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club are playing Medley 11 Stableford while for the last 4 men still alive in the Westward Ho it is the semi-final. No other events have been organised for the weekend but as reminded last week, for those aiming for a place in the end of year Shootout it is another good opportunity to get in a qualifying round. Remember, when playing match play, as the main rounds will be for the club champs, it is not possible to count these rounds as Shootout qualifying rounds as Shootout rounds need to be played on a net basis – ie you have to putt out every hole.

Club Championships

Our men’s club championships begin on Sunday 2 September, our women’s 9 hole championships on Tuesday 11 September, and our women’s 18 hole championships on Saturday 6 October.

A flyer for the men’s club championship, along with an entry sheet, has been posted on the notice board in the downstairs foyer, and a copy of the flyer is attached to this email. The championships are played in 4 divisions and begin with 2 rounds of stroke play which will be played on Sundays 2nd and 9th September. The lowest gross score over the 2 rounds will determine the stroke play champions for each division. The 16 players in each division with the lowest gross score will qualify for the match play knock out rounds which begin on Sunday 16th, with seedings being based on stroke play rankings. The match play rounds will be played “off the stick” – ie no handicaps – and the winner of each division will be crowned our 2018 club champion for that division, and have their name embossed on our honours board for posterity. So get your entries in now, either by adding your name to the entry sheet on the notice board, or by ringing/emailing the club. Entries close at 4pm Friday 31st August.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

On Tuesday a good turnout of the 9 hole ladies played hidden holes. We had an enjoyable round and the winner was Connie Lee on 40, 2nd was Lindsey Pickering on 43 and 3rd was Trish Titcombe on 46.

Men’s Wednesday Club

What an unpredictable day!!! It started with heavy and soft rain and even on the way to the golf course, it still showered. Unsurprisingly, only 12 brave souls turned up and had a good day out golfing. We even had sunshine from the 14th hole. Despite the low turnout, it was decided that we had a normal competition for the day and the winner is Patrick Cordue with a stunning score of 41 stableford points. On all the greens, he never missed a putt!!! We had 2 runner ups with equal score of 36 points: Saint Kennach and Luke Underwood (who was the only one had a two and the NTP prize). Because we had a small number of participants, that's all the balls being distributed.

For the raffles, the winner is Mike Cox and the 2nd prize is Gerd Warnke

For the next 2 weeks, I will be away so probably Ian Bates will entertain you with witty Wednesday club reports. Victor

New Sponsors Signs

Earlier this year the New World in Karori changed hands and we are pleased that under their new ownership they have agreed to continue sponsoring the club. They have had a new sign prepared which has been erected on the 16th, being the hole that they sponsor. In support of our sponsors, we encourage you to purchase your groceries from New World, who are conveniently located in the Karori Mall, on the route home for most of our members.

13th Green Water Tap

Investigations into the E.coli non compliant water sample result we received for the tap next to the 13th green back in May identified a faulty uv lamp, despite it just having been replaced. We therefore replaced the lamp again following which we received a compliant sample. However, 3 clear samples in a row are needed before the water can be cleared to drink. Being winter, and therefore low demand for on course drink replenishment, we have relied on our regular monthly sampling for these results, rather than arrange for special sampling. We have now received 3 clear samples in a row, and will therefore now reopen the tap for players’ access.

Pitch Mark Repairs

Our greens are very soft at the moment, enabling golfers to target the pin with high pitched shots. Unfortunately though not all golfers are repairing their pitch marks, resulting in long term damage to the greens. Pitch marks need to be repaired immediately to avoid this damage, and can be done very easily and quickly. Please make it your regular practice to check for pitch marks when you go onto each green and repair any you see, using the method pictured below. If you don’t have a pitch repair tool, ask for a free one from the shop.

Safety First

We have been reminding members of the need to take care on crossing our bridges which can get very slippery when damp, which they usually are in winter, and the importance therefore of sticking to the grated strip down the middle of them. Other safety guidelines are available for downloading from our website (we have brought the link to them to our front page) and are also included as an attachment to this email. Please read them.

Entertainment Books

It’s not too late to order one of these, and indeed, they will make great Father’s Day presents. We still have one hard copy available for purchase from the shop, but they can also be ordered on line. If you order a hard copy on line before Aug 21 it will be delivered to you free. Digital versions can also be ordered online.
