Good weather is being forecast for both days this weekend so if you haven’t been out to the course lately, this weekend could be the time to rediscover the joys of our course and the pleasures of playing winter golf.

Safety Reminder

As per the separate email sent out earlier this week, please take extra care on our bridges as they can be very slippery when damp, especially if you are wearing plastic cleated golf shoes. These shoes provide good traction around the fairways, but on hard surfaces provide no slip resistance at all. This applies not only to our bridges, but also to rocks in our streams or embedded in their banks. Similarly the steps going up to the toilet on the 4th tee can be slippery when wet, so please use the hand rail when going up and down them.

Note also that some of our grassy slopes also get quite slippery when wet so even with cleated shoes, walk carefully up and down them.

Safety on the course is ultimately your responsibility, but we don’t want to see your golfing experience spoilt by an injury suffered during your round.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club are playing LGU6 while for men it is the quarter finals of the Westward Ho. Best of luck to those still standing, tee offs are at 10.02 and 10.09. No events are programmed for Sunday so for those keen to play in the Shoot Out at the end of the year it could be a good opportunity to get in another qualifying round. An update on qualifying rounds played by the men contenders up to the end of July is attached.

Welcome Ann

We are pleased to welcome Ann Hargreaves Sladden to the clubhouse staff. Ann will be working mainly on Tuesdays, providing the catering for the Tuesday women’s club. Welcome aboard Ann – we hope you enjoy your time working with the club.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

On Tuesday we had an excellent turnout of ladies to play a stableford round of our Medley competition. In spite of the day being cold and the course wet in parts, we had an enjoyable game. The winner on the day was Connie Lee with 16 points, 2nd was Elaine Pearse with 14 points and 3rd was Kath Robison on 13 points. Many thanks to Ann - we are all enjoying our lunches!

Men’s Wednesday Club

No report had been received by the time of publication of this Friday Flash but Dot Golf records show that a field of only 19 ventured out for the Par competition, with numbers less than normal perhaps due to the ominous weather forecast. As it turned out, everyone got back before the late afternoon rainfall, with the winner being Derek Fitzgibbon on +4, followed by Trevor Brown on +3, Luke Underwood on +2, Fergus McLean on +1 and Saint Kennach breaking even. Trevor scored the only 2, on hole 6.

External Events

We regularly receive notices of events that other golf courses are hosting and we put these on the notice board next to the water cooler in the downstairs foyer. One such event coming up is a charity ambrose tournament being put on by the Wanderers Cricket Club at the Shandon Golf Course in September to raise funds for youth cricket. The Wellington Wanderers Cricket Club was established in 1947 and is committed to the promotion of youth cricket in the greater Wellington Region. They do this through playing matches against schools XIs and organising opportunities for young cricketers to play in marquee matches at the Basin Reserve. They work closely with Cricket Wellington as well as the respective Colleges to encourage young men and women to continue playing cricket beyond their school years. A special feature of this year’s event is the opportunity to win a car with a hole-in-one on one of the Par 3 holes. If you are interested in putting a team in, please contact Evan Gray at evan@wandererscricketclub.org.nz

Happy golfing, play safely,
