Winter is half over and the course is in great nick. Although the usual boggy patches are struggling to dry out, the course overall is in excellent condition and providing great winter golf. Cant think of a better way to top up my vitamin D levels at this time of the year.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday club are playing the 4th round of the Pinfold Cup, with this round being played on a stableford basis. For men members it is Monthly Medal which as usual will be played in 2 divisions, with the lower handicappers off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the whites, with both divisions playing on a best net basis. It will double as a shop scramble with a $5 entry fee. Winners of each division will be eligible for the end of year Top Dog play off.

Rigarlsford Tournament

What a great day it was last Saturday, with a field of 65 competing for the Ken and Rose Rigarlsford trophies. Doubling as a Bastille Day tournament, the prizes and catering had a French theme, and it was great to see many members getting into the spirit with berets and other French themed clothing. The winner of the Ken Rigarlsford cup was Nelson Laureles with 39 stableford points, on countback from Matthew Roche, with Paul Hawkes third on 38 points. And the winner of the Rose Rigarlsford cup was Sin Yee Hailstone, on countback from Gloria Grayson, who both scored 34 points. Congratulations to the winners, and to all the participants who made it such a fun outing. Thanks also to all those who entered the raffle which generated $300 towards club funds.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

The beautiful weather bought out most of the 9 hole ladies on Tuesday. We had 19 players so a great turnout. We played a Par game and the first 3 places all scored -2. Ingrid Rampton 1st, Marion Thompson 2nd and Susan Wright 3rd.

Men’s Wednesday Club

The competition was held on a nice sunny day and despite being in the middle of winter, the temperature was very comfortable. However, with many of our retired members being away on holiday, we had only 29 participants. We had 3 visitors from other clubs (Mornington, Miramar and Kapiti) but we missed most of them at the clubhouse.

There were two winners with the best score of 36 stableford points on countback Saint Kennach won the day with the runner up Graham Presland. On 35 points, we had 3 players: Rob Ashby of Mornington, Mark Noblett (Nobby) and Peter Kennedy. Balls were distributed to 34 points. Unlucky for myself, I did not get a ball being on 33 points.

Again, for 3 weeks in a row, we did not have any two's. The NTP prize went to Martin Leung but he missed the putt, therefore, he had to donate to the Pig. The most exercised prize went to Ian Livingstone.

For raffle prizes, the winner was Mark Dinsdale, 2nd prize Alan Frazier and 3rd prize Fergus McLean. For the wine raffle, this is one rare occasion when a non-committee member won: Paul Hawkes.

In the next few weeks, I would like the members to think about the following issues:

i) Finances: for at least 10 years, the entry fee has been set at $5 and it has not been changed. The fee includes $2 notionally for raffle prizes. It is proposed that instead of $5 inclusive of raffle prizes, we should scrap the cash raffles with all $5 going towards the competition. After prizes and expenses, the surplus thus generated will be used as donations to the club for projects such as capital equipment, renovation of the club house etc.

ii) We will continue with the wine raffle or other prizes to raise additional funds for the club equipment account.

These issues will be formally tabled on Wed 1 August for a vote. Please make sure you are present by 10:30 am on 1 Aug if you want your views heard and to vote.

Next Major Men’s Event – Westward Ho Shield

Our next major event for men members is the Westward Ho shield, which along with our bar, takes its name from the previous Karori Golf Club which opened in the South Makara Valley in the 1930s. This is a singles match play on handicap knock out event, played off the white tees. A qualifying round will be played on Saturday 28th July, with the 16 players with the best net scores going on to the first knock out round the following Saturday. An entry form is on the notice board in the downstairs foyer, or ring/email the club.

Spray Sign

The large sign for advising recent spraying that used to be visible as you came down our drive, but which for the past year has been propped up by a tree after having been blown over in a storm, has now been removed. The green keepers now have a smaller portable sign which they will erect next to the compressed air shoe cleaner whenever they have done any spraying.

Committee Feedback

The committee held its monthly meeting last Monday and can report as follows:

· With our financial year ¾ over, our FYTD income, costs and trading surplus look very similar to last year. However, an increase in our fundraising income, boosted from grants towards our new mowers, masks reductions in subscriptions and green fees.

· We expect to receive our new mowers around the end of the month, which will of course require us to pay for them. We will be using vendor financing to cover what we haven’t been able to raise by grants, which will increase our monthly outgoings for the next 5 years. This will stress our cash position over the next few months, given we are now into our off-season for revenue generation.

· With our cash reserves expected to be severely tested over the coming months, members whose subscriptions are due for renewal are requested to pay them promptly, and of course, any donations would be very appreciated. All donations will be receipted and given our charity status, eligible for tax refunds next year.

· Progress towards subdividing a section of our spare land for sale next year is making good progress and we expect to have a proposal ready for member approval at our AGM in December.

· The marketing subcommittee is preparing for a major promotional push in spring, including a leaflet drop, sponsors tournament, and open day.

· We are currently negotiating renewals of hole sponsorships – if any member has a business they would like to promote via sponsorship of one of our holes, please speak to Erich Bucher.
