A welcome respite from the rain yesterday and although a bit more is forecast for this afternoon, the weekend is predicted to be mostly fine. Please note though that many of our slopes will be slippery so please take care. We recommend cleated golf shoes, but note that they themselves will be slippery on smooth surfaces so please stick to the grated areas of our bridges when crossing them. As separately advised, the course is still closed for carts.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday Club will be playing the 3rd round of the Pinfold Cup with this round being played on a stableford basis. For the men it is Monthly Medal which as usual will be played in 2 divisions with the lower handicappers off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the white tees. It is played on a net basis with the winners of each division eligible for the Top Dog play off at the end of the year. It doubles as a Shop Scramble, for which the entry fee is $5. Don’t forget that as advised by separate email, we are now playing “Placing through the Green”, so you can now place your ball anywhere on the course except in hazards, bunkers, and out-of-bounds.

On Sunday it is the quarter finals of the Bertram Cup, our main men’s pairs event of the year. There were some great tussles last week, with a few surprises, which just goes to show that the handicapping system works. Best of luck to the 8 remaining pairs – the first group tees off at 10.02.

Internet Outage

Our internet connection cut out for a period last Sunday, resulting in many players that day not being able to enter their rounds after play. The failure was due to a fault in one of the charging systems of the Makara Community Internet that we hook into. Fortunately a couple of the locals who maintain it were able to fix it later that day, and the unentered score cards were entered later in the afternoon – however if you think yours has been overlooked, please let us know.

Playing Protocols during busy periods

Our most popular tee booking times are early Saturday and Sunday mornings. It would not be unusual for all the tee slots between 7.30 and 9.30am to be fully booked. To ensure that play flows smoothly without holdups, it is important that each foursome keeps in sight of the group ahead of them. Please note that it is not acceptable during fully booked periods to play as a 5, as that will likely hold up the players behind you. Similarly it is not acceptable to be sharing clubs, as that will also slow down play. Conversely, if you have booked as a two for one of the tee slots during these busy periods, and no other players join your group, you will have to accept that you will be held up. There is no point in the foursome ahead of you letting you through, as you will only come up against the next foursome in front of them, and it is not fair that foursomes during busy periods should be held up by having to let twosomes through.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

Unfortunately Tuesday was completely rained off but a few managed to get out on Thursday instead.

18 Hole Midweek Women

Another miserable week weather wise resulting in the Tuesday competition being postponed to Thursday. However Monday’s weather at Judgeford was considerably better than the weather in Wellington allowing our midweek pennants team to play in calm mainly overcast conditions.

The result was not so sunny with the team sustaining a 6-3 loss to Otaki.

We now have two more rounds to play. Next Monday at Otaki and the following Monday at Masterton.

Men’s Wednesday Club

For the second week in a row, the men’s Wednesday Club was postponed to today, but unlike last Friday, the weather today has started well enough to attract a good number out to the course for this week’s event.

Pitch and Putt

The “Shirties” are a group of members who play regularly together early Sunday morning. Last Saturday they organised a very successful mid-winter PnP event for their family and friends. Their convener, Peter Howman, reports:

Non golfers drew partners (not their own!) and we played as 4 couples per tee.

Alternate shots, with alternate tee offs, counting only shots that hit the ball, and we played the big holes.

We teed off at 2.30pm and were back in the club house by 3.45pm, where we had a sausage sizzle, wedges and drinks, and were all away by 5.15pm.

For a cool breezy mid winter day we had 32 players turn out with a wide range of ages. This was organised by word of mouth with Shirties, friends, family, and work mates.

A great outing enjoyed by all, with requests to do it again.

Some comments:

“So much fun to get outside and whack a little ball”

“What a great set-up. Didn’t realise I could have so much fun doing something I didn’t know I could do.”

“I didn’t know that I would enjoy playing PnP, but what fun. Not too long”

“Will put it too my workmates to come for a social function”

“Great to participate, with my son enjoying the experience”

Many thanks to Sara in the kitchen and to Jono for keeping the bar open.

The purpose of this event was to show that non golfers can have as much fun as golfers on the Pitch n Putt course, and age is no limit.

From all accounts this was a very successful outing and we encourage all members to invite their family, friends, colleagues and workmates to similar events.
