Well, winter is certainly upon us, but the good news is that the weather is meant to clear this afternoon and be fine for the rest of the weekend. Please note though that our slopes will be slippery so take extra care. And as previously advised, the course will be closed for carts.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday Club will be playing Stableford. On Sunday it is the first knock out round of the Bertram Cup, our main men’s pairs event of the year, played off the blue tees on a 4BBB basis on handicap. The draw was sent out earlier this week, with the first grouping off at 10.02am. Best of luck to all pairs.

Recent Results

The final round of the Autumn Cup, played over the men’s interclub season by non interclub players, was completed late last month and won, for the third year in a row, by Ian Patience. At one stage it looked like John McDougall might upseat Ian’s hold on the trophy, making his move while Ian was away on holiday, but then John missed the final 2 rounds and therefore the chance to improve on his best 7 round score. Final overall scores were Ian Patience first with 62 points, and John McDougall runner up on 58 points, one ahead of third equal Pete McMillen and Phil Pigou, both on 57 points. Well done Ian, again, but note that this is not like the Football World Cup – ie you don’t get to keep the cup after you’ve won it 3 times!

With interclub now over, our 3 men’s interclub teams were meant to play each other a couple of Sunday’s ago for the Tin Cup and the prized Beige Jacket. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t golf friendly, resulting in a modest turnout:

Div 2 – 2 x players

Div 5 – 5 x Players

Div 9 – 9 x Players

Given the conditions and that the 4th green was taking on a lot of water, a vote was taken on whether to play or not. The vote was to play but it wasn’t compulsory to do so. As a result, 5 players chose to go home leaving the following complement:

Div 2 – 1 x player

Div 5 – 3 x players

Div 9 – 7 x players

whereupon team captains determined that the fairest thing was to award the Tin Cup and Beige Jacket to Div 9 in light of the fact they outnumbered the other teams Two to One. If this were a more serious event, we would have considered other options but the decision was discussed and accepted by everyone present as being fair and reasonable. Congratulations therefore to our Div 9 team and their captain Carl Beentjes, who we look forward to seeing in the beige jacket sometime.

Hole-in-One

Congratulations to Dave Thorburn who last Saturday aced the 13th hole. Well done Dave, and on behalf of those also playing that day and able to enjoy a free drink afterwards, thanks for putting on the shout. Thanks also to long time member Athol Swann for supplying us the hand crafted hole-in-one ball mounts that he turns from macrocarpa from the course, one of which will now be presented to Dave, once we have had it suitably engraved.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Hole Midweek Women

With the weather being unsettled on Tuesday, there was not a large turnout for this week's Medley round which was a stableford competition.

The winner was Jane Campbell, 2nd Marion Thompson and 3rd Connie Lee.

Men’s Wednesday Club

This week’s Wednesday Club was postponed to today, given the bitterly cold and damp conditions on Wednesday, but unfortunately today hasn't cleared up in time to attract many of the regulars.

Membership Tags

We have a large number of membership tags awaiting pick up from the shop. If you have joined or renewed this year and haven’t picked up your latest membership tag, please do so next time you are out at the club.

Greens Mini tines

Given the weather this week our green keepers were able to mini tine only 2 of the greens. They will aim to do the rest when weather permits.

Please Replace Divots and Repair Pitch Marks

With soft conditions likely to be the norm for our course for the next few months, “fat” shots are likely to take a large divot. Please replace them – a replaced and patted down divot should repair itself which will help keep our fairways smooth. Similarly, balls will leave pitch marks on the green – these need to be repaired immediately to avoid long term damage. Our greens over Autumn have been as good as any in the region, regularly earning accolades from visiting players, and we would like to keep this reputation. If you haven't got a pitch mark repair tool, ask for a complimentary one from the shop. The correct way to use it is demonstrated in these photos - ie pull the turf towards the centre of the pitch mark, rather than prying up the centre of the depression:
