As advised by separate email, the course is currently closed for carts due to very slippery and wet conditions following all the recent rain and windless drying conditions. Please note also that the water tap by the 13th green is still out of action so there is no drinking water available on the course. We are currently getting the filters rechecked (they were replaced recently) following which we will need to get 3 clear samples before we can reopen the tap. If playing over the weekend, please make sure you carry enough liquid refreshment with you when you tee off.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow is the final round of interclub for our men’s teams, with our women’s Mary Alward team having played their final match last weekend. Our Div 2 men’s team is playing away to Boulcott Farm, against whom they will fight it out for second place in the division. Our Div 5 team is away to Titahi Bay, against whom they need a good win to ensure they finish above Manor Park and avoid relegation, while our Div 9 team close out their season at home to Ohariu. Best of luck to all our interclub representatives.

For non interclub players, our Women’s Saturday Club is playing Round 2 of the Pinfold Cup, with this round being played on a stableford basis, while for non-interclub men it is the final round of the Autumn Cup, with this round also being played on a stableford basis.

Upcoming Events

Next Saturday, 26th May, we are hosting the Argentina National Day Tournament being put on by the Argentinian Ambassador. We are planning for a field of 50, of which 30 can be club members, beginning with a shotgun start at midday. As a result, the front 9 will be closed from 9.45am through to about 12.30. This event was a lot of fun last year, with Argentinian themed catering being put on after play, so if you would like to play in it (it is a stableford event open to both men and women) enter soon be adding your name to the start sheet on the downstairs notice board or by ringing/emailing the club. Please note that entries will close next Thursday so that they can be forwarded to David Hill, the convenor of the diplomatic golfing community, who will be doing the draw.

The next day, Sunday 27th May, will be the Tin Cup, where the 3 men’s interclub teams will battle each other for the coveted beige jacket, teeing off at 8.30am. Interclub players, please keep this date free.

The following weekend is Queen’s Birthday Weekend but please note that on Sunday 3rd June it is the qualifying round for the Bertram Cup for men. This is a 4BBB pairs match-play-on-handicap event played off the blue tees and is the major men's pairs event of the year. Start forming your pairs now and enter them on the start sheet that will go up on the downstairs notice board this weekend.

Recent Results

Last Saturday our interclub teams were all in action with the following results:

· Our women’s Mary Alward team had a very good 11-1 win over Shandon at home, to jump them into 3rd position in their division.

· Our Div 2 men’s team beat Royal Wellington 10-5 at Heretaunga to put them only 0.5 points behind second placed Boulcott’s Farm, who they play tomorrow.

· Our Div 5 team lost 7-8 at home to Paraparaumu and have now been caught by Manor Park in 5th equal position, so it will all come down to tomorrow’s results as to who avoids the wooden spoon.

· Our Div 9 team lost 12-3 away to Boulcott’s Farm but are still well clear of bottom placed Ohariu who they play tomorrow.

The highlight of the interclub round was no doubt the turnout for our Div 2 team by our Life Member Len Kenna. When it looked like the team might have to play one player short Jan Sharp suggested to team captain Jay Maaka that they give the opportunity to 96 year old Len to play a round at Heretaunga which he gratefully accepted. Although he lost his match 10/8 he played very well and had a lot of fun. The story spread quickly and by Monday night it was on Stuff and on Tuesday it was in the DomPost, with other media apparently also now looking to run the story. Well done Jan, Jay and Len. Interclub Lunches

Thanks to Sara’s culinary skills our club is building a reputation of providing the best lunches on the interclub circuit. Indeed, Ohariu’s Div 5 team captain was heard to say in the after match speeches when they played here a couple of weeks ago that he hoped our Div 5 team wouldn’t be relegated because they wanted to play us again next year as we provided the best lunch in the division. The 2 Duncan Cup teams we hosted last Saturday, when the weather wasn’t the warmest or driest, also enjoyed the hot lunch they were provided after their first 18 holes to revitalise them before going out for their second round. This photo shows then serving themselves hot ham, roasted vegetables, warm garlic bread, and a variety of salads. Well done Sara.

Women’s Midweek Club

9 Holers

On Tuesday only 3 hardy 9 holers braved the drizzly conditions. Without any wind to contend with, the morning was surprisingly pleasant. Because of the poor turnout, our match play competition will be starting next Tuesday.

18 Holers

The midweek interclub Pennants team played Waikanae at Te Marua on Monday in surprisingly good weather in contrast to what was being experienced in the City. Unfortunately we were unable to record a point leaving us at the bottom of the division. Our next game is at Masterton on 28 May.

On Tuesday the competition was Medley 8 Par which was won by Sin Yee Hailstone. Due to the weather conditions there was a low turnout of players who managed to play in conditions that were not too bad after all.

Men’s Wednesday Club

With squally rain lashing Karori and an ominous forecast, an early call was made to postpone this week’s Wednesday Club to today, Friday. This proved to be a wise decision, and by a look at today’s field, a good number of the Wednesday regulars have been able to make it today.

Course Safety

With the onset of wet weather it is timely to remind members to take extra care when out on our course. In particular, our slopes can get very slippery, especially patches where the grass may still be struggling to recover from the long hot summer. Cleated golf shoes are recommended, but note that these have no traction on hard surfaces such as wooden bridges or rocks in stream beds. When crossing our bridges please stick to the grated middle, do not stop to look for balls over the edge of the bridge, and do not pass other players on the bridge. Be extra careful if clambering down to our streams to look for balls, and do not step on rocks in the stream, even if they may look like purposely positioned stepping stones.

Happy golfing, play safely,

Your KGC Committee
