A fine weekend is forecast, so no excuse not to get out onto the course to work off those over-indulgences of hot cross buns and Easter eggs last weekend.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday Club are playing LGU2 Putting 2 while for men it is Monthly Medal for April. As usual, this is played in 2 divisions with the lower handicappers off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the white tees, with the winner of each division going on to play in the Top Dog playoff at the end of the year.

On Sunday we are hosting the Karori Event Centre fundraising ambrose tournament which tees off with a shotgun start at 11am. As a result, the course will be closed from 7am to 3pm but with daylight saving now over, it should be possible for our early Sunday morning regulars to sneak in a round provided they tee off before 7am. This will be the third year we have hosted this event and going by the last two, should be a lot of fun. If you still haven’t entered, email your team details to Fleur Nicholas (fleurandrichnz@gmail.com) today so that you can be included in the draw which we will do tomorrow.

Recent Results

Alex Lim beat Don McCrone 4/2 to win the Holland Cup, and to finally put to rest the curse of the top qualifier.

Winners of the Miners Arms Bowl played over summer were Kevin Norquay and Garth Mickell with a combined total over the three rounds of 140 stableford points. Competition was tight with 2 pairs very close behind on 137 points: Chris Prowse & Jose Ribeiro and Geoff Lee & Matthew Everett.

And the Summer Eclectic also came down to a tight finish, requiring handicap indexes to determine the correct result, with John Stubbe’s net 47.8 just pipping Antony Kennedy’s 48.15. Third was Peter McMillen with net 50. There were a few not quite completed scores – we will put the score sheets and results back onto the notice board for another couple of weeks for anyone wishing to complete their eclectic record.

Women’s Midweek Club

On Tuesday the 9 hole ladies played the back 9. Our competition was Medal 3 and the winner was Belinda Osman on 35 nett. An excellent effort played in windy conditions. It was also great to welcome a new member, Loreen Brehaut, to the 9 hole ladies group.

Men’s Wednesday Club

Last Wednesday marked a big turnout of members taking advantage of fine but gusty weather. We had 41 in the field including 11 Ohariu members who escaped the coring of their golf course. Due to professionally mowed but super fast greens plus very strong North Westerlies, most of us struggled to have low scores. We had only 5 players got the results below their handicap. However, we had a few significant events during the game:

First, Ian Bates, the Wellington Karori Vets rep, had the first hole in one of his career at no. 6. Even thouh he had played safe hitting the hill on the left, the ball slowly dropped into the hole after he had thought of declaring "lost" ball. So, congratulation to Ian achieving one item in his bucket list. And we appreciate for the shout afterwards at the club house.

Secondly, the competiton was won by an Ohariu member. Barry Winfield had a plus 3 in the par competition, beating at least 38 other Karori members. Well done to Barry as a visitor to the club.

On count back, our own Satish Chandra also got +3. Balls were distributed to -1 for Michael Cox. Other winners are Ian Collingan, a graduate of 9-holers group got +2, Dennis Cox of Boulcott farm with +1, Fergus McLean with plus 1, Graeme Crocker with even score.

Regular raffles were won by Doug Calhoun, Ian Colligan and Kevin Corrin.

Wine raffle went to an Ohariu member

For team competition, based on the best five pars of the two clubs, Karori easily won even though Barry Winfield won the individual category.

We had 2 two's but they are from Ohariu group: Barry Winfield and Ian Murray. No Karori members got two, even though Gerd Warnke came close despite having the NTP (nearest to the pin). He had to donate the pig for not making a birdie.

Bunny prize went to our previous Wednesday club convenor, Chris Pearce. Perhaps, he was not pleased having to play in a fivesome.

Because we suffered too many incidents involving the drawing of discs and exemptions to the disc rule, the Committee decided to centralize the allocation of tee off holes. From now on, Mike Cox will be in charge of this important function, therefore, if you want to pair with some one or going home early, etc. please see Mike. He has the sole charge of disc allocation before the draw. Pleease no one one else should handle the discs before the draw.

Finally, we had a fun day mixing with visitors, with the club house being almost full and incidents like hole in one etc.

Victor will be off for another two weeks in Canada, so, Patrick will be in charge in the meantime.

Harcourts Twilight 29 March - Final Night

After the disappointment of last weeks cancellation, it was great to have a perfect evening for our final round of the season. A lot to play for with our regular weekly prizes, and also the final results for the overall season up for grabs. Another good turnout with 21 players vying for the prize money with some good scoring overall.
The winner on our final night was Graeme Couper on 22 points ($15), followed by Brigitte Boenisch Brednich and Jo Hurst on 21 ($10), and Don McCrone, Doug Calhoun, Jeff Mason, Marg McCarthy and Gloria Grayson on 20 points ($5).
The final round had a big impact on the overall season winner - a great finish to a very competitive season. So the final winners were as follows:
Harcourts Twilight Cup - highest average stableford points over the whole season (more than 10 rounds played)
1st - Jo Hurst 18.75 stb
2nd - Gail Kirkland 18.68 stb
3rd - Graeme Couper 18.50 stb

Highest Aggregate Score over the whole season:
1st - Jo Hurst 375 stb
2nd - Antony Kennedy 360 stb
3rd - Wayne Cook 358 stb
Highest men's individual stableford round - Richard Reith and Wayne Cook (27 points)
Highest women's individual stableford round - Brigitte Boenisch Brednich (27 points)
Lowest average stableford points (more than 10 rounds) - James Reith

We had plenty of spot prizes on the night for all with prizes totalling over $600 given out to all the winners. Another excellent dinner with outstanding deserts provided by Jo, Rolf, and Graham Hoy which were gratefully appreciated.

A great celebration for our final night and many thanks to our brilliant sponsors, Richard Reith, Anita Corlett and James Reith from Harcourts Team Yip, Sara Bowen for arranging the bbq and salads, and for everyone’s help during the season preparing the meal, running the bar and clearing up afterwards (too many to name). Tim and I have enjoyed a hugely successful Twilight season, and look forward to seeing everyone back again when daylight saving returns in October 2018.
