Hard to believe Easter is upon us. Happy golfing to all those who get a chance to play a round or two over the break, whether on our course or somewhere on your travels. Our women’s Saturday club will be playing Par but other than that, no other events have been programmed over Easter. However, please note that as part of our anniversary celebrations we have invited Miramar and Manor Park club members to play for free on our course over Easter, in recognition that their clubs were originally previous incarnations of the Karori Golf Club. If you see any of them on our course, please make them feel welcome.

We intend to have the clubhouse open every day over Easter, but please note that licencing laws do not allow us to have the bar open on Good Friday or Easter Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Our next major event is the Karori Events Centre fundraiser tournament on Sunday 8 April, an ambrose event to raise funds for the Karori Event Centre that has been built in central Karori but needs further funds to complete the fit out. This will be the third year we have run this tournament, with the last 2 being extremely popular and a lot of fun. If you haven’t already done so, please put your teams together and complete an entry form available from the shop desk, or email directly to Fleur Nicholas. The entry fee is $30 per club member (ie $120 per team of 4) and $50 per non member, with all the net proceeds going towards funds for fitting out the new events centre. If you would like to play but don’t have a team, let the club know and we will put some teams together.

Recent Results

Last weekend our interclub teams fared as follows:

· Our women’s Mary Alward team had a 7.5-4.5 home win over Kapiti

· Our Div 2 men’s team had an 8-7 win at home over Paraparaumu in what is proving to be a very competitive division with no weak teams

· Our Div 5 men’s team had a 12-3 win at home over Manor Park to make up some ground on the rest of the division

· Our Div 7 men’s team scored 4.5 valuable away points against Judgeford.

Played last Sunday the Monthly Medal attracted many players in the Blue division, with Jeff Mason and Keith Atkinson both scoring net 73. Both therefore qualify for the Top Dog playoff at the end of the year and their respective positions in this playoff will determine which of them wins the medal for March. There was only one entrant in the White division, being Anthony Bryant who therefore also qualifies for the Top Dog.

Women’s Midweek Club

On Monday the pennants team played Miramar at Royal Wellington. Unfortunately despite our best efforts we lost 7 – 2.

The Tuesday competition was Medley 4 Stableford. Seven women teed off in the rain and some lasted the distance with Shelley Hall the winner and Gloria Grayson runner up.

Men’s Wednesday Club

Despite the gloomy weather forecast for the Wellington region, the weather for the day turned out to be perfect for golf at Makara. Only 24 members turned up for the stableford competition but the day was an enjoyable one.

You will notice that the tee allocation format is now slightly different because we will use hole no 10 as a start up to distribute all players more evenly. So, please check the new Disc Draw chart on the wall.

Results for the day are:

The winner is Graeme Crocker with 36 points, so, he won a big Easter Chocolate prize. The runners up are with 35 points: Luke Underwood and Chris Pearce. The bunny prize went to Saint Kennach (after beating Peter Wilcox for the prize) and he got the Easter Bunny. All Easter prizes were donated by one of the above winners so he got back some of what he gave away.

Balls were given to other winners Don McCrone, Ian Bates, David Norton, Victor Diem, Mike Suggate and Keith Gaskin (down to 32 points). Don is the only one who got a two and he donated all the balls back to the Committee. Thank you Don.

Nearest to the Pin is David Burton but he missed the putt so had to donate a gold coin to the piggy bank.

Since we had a small turnout so only 2 raffle prizes were drawn today with the winner is Martin and David Burton as 2nd.

For the Wine raffle, the winner is again Graeme Crocker. He had a lucky day and he should buy Lotto if I were him.

For next week competition, about 10 Ohariu members are visiting us for the day. So, please welcome them to our club and competition. (I recommend Chris, Derek and Graeme to look after our guests)

Just a note to our members: please support our Wine Raffle because we want to help the Club with its equipment purchase programme at the end of the year. And please pick up a box of empty bottles to re-cycle in your fortnightly bin at home. This would lessen the workload for our bar staff.

The Wednesday Club Committee would like to thank Mark especially for his voluntary service, Sara and Debbie as well as the greens staff. They have done a magnificent job despite poor working machinery and after comparing with richer clubs like Boulcott Farms, Miramar etc the Vets are proud of our golf course.

Cheers, Victor Diem, (and Patrick Cordue, Ian Bates and Mike Cox)

Harcourts Twilight Tonight

The grand finale is tonight with end of season prize giving and bumper feast to follow play. Make sure you have teed off by 5pm to ensure you finish before dark and to ensure you are not late for the after play festivities.

Vietnam Golf Trip

Club member Victor Diem is organising a golfing and sightseeing trip to Vietnam in November to raise funds for the club and the local Vietnamese Association – see attached proposed itnerary. Victor says:

a. It's the cheapest you can find in town. In fact, it is at least 30% to 40% less than any comparable tours from NZ to Vietnam

b. It's the most luxurious tour package because all hotels are five star except for 2 nights in Da Lat where the hotel is only 4 star. You only have to pay from NZ$3,500 with $680 single supplement.

You book your own airfare, which is currently only $1,000 return on Air New Zealand incl. taxes and surcharges.

c. All meals are included even tips, visa fees, domestic airfares, bus transport and sightseeing etc. So you don't have to bring a big wallet on the tour except when buying souvenirs.

d. Most of travellers are from the Wellington region

If you are interested, let Victor know (Tel. (04)4769 567 or 021-1306034). He will call a presentation evening at Karori Community Centre (7 Beauchamp Street) on Wednesday April 4 at 7:30 to 9:30 to give you a background to the trip. The purpose of the meeting is to ascertain what people want, we can modify the tour itinerary or cutting it short to suit your needs, and to register for the tour.

Feel free to share with your colleagues, friends etc. the above information. Regards, Victor Diem
