A shame about the early week rain which put paid to the women’s Tuesday Club but the men’s Wednesday Club fared much better and although the odd shower is forecast for the weekend, it should be good golfing conditions both days.

This weekend’s Events

Tomorrow, the last day of September and of the Club’s financial year, the women’s Saturday Club are playing Odds/Evens. On Sunday, it is the semi finals of the men’s club championships. Best of luck to those still in contention for a place on our honours board.

Disc Draw Event Saturday 7th October

We had originally scheduled the India Cup for next Saturday but this was switched to a Wednesday Club event. In lieu of it we will hold a disc draw event open to all members, male and female, that will be played on a Par basis. For the women entrants, your score will therefore also count towards the Par event already scheduled for the Saturday Club that day. The draw will be done at 9.45 for a shot gun start off the front nine at 10am. No need to enter beforehand – just turn up on the day by 9.30 to get your name into the draw.

Tommy’s Honour

This movie about Old Tom Morris and his son Tommy, winners of 8 British Open titles between them in the mid 1800s, is now showing at the following theatres in Wellington: Penthouse in Brooklyn, Light House in Petone, Miro in Trentham. We had 30 players enter the draw for 2-for-1 passes last weekend with the following players being successful in the lucky draw:

Alan Henwood, Phil Pigou, Mary Kavanagh, Trevor Brown, Geoff Parr, Ramlal Misra, Kevin Norquay, Tim Richards, Graham Dray, Peter Howman

Your passes are available for pick up at the shop.

Harcourts Twilight

The countdown is almost over. With daylight saving having begun last weekend Twilight golf, sponsored by Harcourts, will begin next Thursday 5th October. This is a great opportunity to utilise the extra daylight hours to play 9 holes of social golf with a competitive but fun edge, followed by a barbecue back in the club house, all for only $15. Non members are also welcome, for whom the cost is $20. Turn up about 5pm to ensure you have teed off by 5.30.

Wednesday Club

Wednesday Club Results for 27 September:

23 enthusiastic Golfers entered the Stableford Competition on what eventually became one of our better days weather wise and with 7 stalwart 9 Holers who enjoyed “Doing their thing”, one or two of them expressing how hungry they felt on the 9th Green and were very grateful for the toasted sandwiches that followed!

A warm welcome was extended to Rob Ashby a member of Mornington Golf Club and he revelled in the conditions scoring a fine 43 Points to win the competition with Mark (Nobbie) Noblett runner up with 40, those with 34 or more points were also awarded the usual golf ball.

Nearest the Pin on the 4th was also claimed by our visitor Rob Ashby and received the bonus golf ball for sinking his putt for a “Two” (almost a ‘gimme’ apparently!). There was one other “Two” also on the 4th by ‘Nobbie’ Noblett.

For sheer persistence Luke Underwood was suitably recognised for his efforts and our Weekly Raffle winner was Dick Adam with No 8, 2nd was No 22 held by Mark Dinsdale and 3rd No 10 Fergus McLean.

How simply fantastic our Course looks when bathed in sunshine further enhanced by little to no wind thus we look forward to more of the same next week. See you there.

NZIS Tournament

The NZ Institute of Sport students will again be holding an ambrose tournament this Spring as part of their course studies, on Friday 27th October. As with previous years, the entry fee will be $25 for club members and $40 for non members. Lock this date into your diaries now, and start thinking about forming your teams.

Prodrive City of Wellington Classic

This is our major open tournament of the year, open to all members and other golfers from around the district. It is scheduled for Saturday 11th November so lock this date into your diaries now. We first ran this tournament 40 years ago so we would like to make this one extra special, and hope that as many members as possible are able to enter. A flyer is attached to this email and we will put up an entry form on the notice board in the downstairs foyer next week.

50th Anniversary Feb/March 2018

Continuing the history of our club, as part of the build up to the 50th anniversary of the current club:

By the early 90s the club was again in a difficult financial position, but with fewer members, raising funds by debentures, advance subscriptions etc was going to be more difficult than previously. The Annual Report for 1993 showed a deficit of $87k after interest payments of $73k which was making the bank nervous given our overdraft had risen to $200k. Some respite was gained from the sale of the green keeper’s house (alongside the 18th fairway) enabling the club to battle on long enough to enjoy an uplift in fortunes in the mid 90s as interest rates dropped and green fees grew as a result of a renewed interest in golf, partly fuelled by the success of the NZ Eisenhower Trophy team and the increasing golf coverage being given by the emerging Sky television network. This renewed positivity around the club enabled it to cope with a major fire in the club house in August 1995 (believed to have been caused by a mouse chewing through the insulation of the power cord behind the bar fridge) and to hold several successful 25th jubilee events later that same year.

Sponsor Speak

The fifth hole is sponsored by Moss Off Roofing Solutions Ltd, specialists in roof cleaning and maintenance right through to roof replacement. Moss Off

The hole is stroke hole 3 and aptly named “Creek and Groan” given the vagaries of the challenges playing it. Hookers and slicers can find themselves in trouble off the tee amongst the trees, and the higher handicappers are often caught in no-man’s land with a difficult decision as to whether to lay up in front of the creek with their second shot or take the risk of getting over it. And the challenges are not over once having made the green, as the slope and pace of this green make for some very challenging cross slope putts.
