Although we had some pretty strong winds yesterday, and it is forecast to be fine all day today, the course is still very boggy in patches so we will be keeping the course closed for carts this weekend. But otherwise the course is in remarkably good condition considering the amount of rain Wellington has been experiencing this winter, and according to some of our visitors, is faring better than other courses in the region. As always though, please take extra care on our slippery slopes and preferably wear cleated golf shoes. If you don’t have any, Prodrive have extended their sale for another week.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our Saturday women’s club are playing Odds and Evens while for men it is Monthly Medal. The Monthly Medal is played in 2 divisions with the lower handicap players playing off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the white tees. The winners of both divisions will be eligible to compete for the Top Dog trophy at the end of the year, in which all medal winners will play off the white tees. The entry fee for the Monthly Medal is $5 and the first 20 entrants will receive a bottle of slightly expired (but should still be drinkable) Poweraid.

On Sunday the 4 remaining players left in the Westward Ho! will be fighting it out for a place in the final. Best of luck guys.

The revised flyer is attached to this email with all the details plus it is on the downstairs notice board along with the entry sheet. Wednesday Club

Wednesday Club and India Cup results for 16 August

Unfortunately considerable rainfall the previous night rendered the course unsuitable for Golf Carts this day however the ensuing beautiful weather greeted some 30 entries for the India Cup stableford competition run in conjunction with the Wednesday Club. Eight 9 Holers also turned out to tackle the very damp course condition and sample the taste of Indian Curry provided by Sara as well as for the competition entrants.

Great to see a couple of members Ramial Misra and Terry Bastion make a special effort to join the Wednesday Club for the day’s competition.

Just before the Draw Chris Pearce presented Graeme Crocker with his Hole in One on the 4th ball some weeks ago, on the base masterfully crafted by Athol Swann and suitably engraved.

Considering the heavy conditions a great round by Jan Sharp netted him 40 Points and outright winner of the India Cup presented by Chris Pearce.

Runner up by count-back was Martin Leung with 36 points from Mike Suggate. Golf balls were won by those with 33 or more points. Kevin Corrin edged out Chris Pearce to win the treasured Golf Ball for sheer persistence and whilst David Thorburn was nearest the Prodrive Sponsors Pin on the 4th he unfortunately missed the putt and having to leave early the penalty fine will need be collected next time.,

Two’s were scored on the 6th by Jan Sharp and Fergus Mclean together with Mike Suggate on the 4th.

A solid round of applause greeted the vote of thanks to Ramial Misra, Satish Chandra and Arvind Zodgekar who donated prizes for the Competition and to Patick Cordue who donated a dozen Golf Balls to the Wednesday Club.

Chris then urged players to be more aware of the need to keep ahead of those behind when on the Course. Ready Golf practice needs to be the norm for most non Match Play events to speed up play.

The weekly raffle resulted with a win for No 4 held by Don McCrone, second by No 5 Steve Robinson & third No 11 Ian Patience.

Another super day at our fantastic Golf Club and here’s to the approaching Summer.

See you all next week, DS

Men’s Bathroom Update

The upgrade is getting close to completion with the floor now tiled and final plumbing underway. However, please note that the entire bathroom will be out of bounds this weekend. If men members need to use the toilet or basins in the club house then use the women's toilets but please respect their privacy and their tidiness.

50th Anniversary Feb/March 2018

Continuing the history of our club, as part of the build up to the 50th anniversary of the current club: The third incarnation of the Karori Golf Club that started as the Westward Ho Golf Company in 1933 survived for several years despite the difficulties of the times, and an encounter with the law for running a bar in a non licence area. The course was extended to 18 holes and in 1939 the winner of the Wellington Suburban Golf Championship was R G Holland who donated the cup that he won to the Karori Golf Club and is now played for each year as the Holland Cup. The Second World War though took its toll with many of the club’s members serving overseas and the difficulty of getting out to the course over the unsealed Makara Hill road when tyres and fuel were in short supply. The club therefore went into recess in 1942 with remaining funds put into a Post Office savings account. Although it was hoped that the club would bounce back after the war, this didn’t happen and the course reverted to farm land. It would be 2 decades before the next and current incarnation of the Karori Golf Club would emerge.
