What a great week weather wise for the visiting Lions supporters, although unfortunately it looks like it may not last through to Saturday evening’s test at Westpac Stadium. Great to see various Lions supporters out at our course during the week, with many having chosen our course over others in the region on the basis of our website.

This Weekend’s Events

Tomorrow our women’s Saturday Club will be playing Medley 13 – Nett, while for men members it is your chance to win a Monthly Medal. The Monthly Medal is played in 2 divisions with the lower handicappers off the blue tees and the higher handicappers off the white tees. The winners of each division will go forward for the chance to play off for the Top Dog trophy at the end of the year which will be played off the white tees for everyone.

Also tomorrow some of our women members will be playing in the Mary Alward field day being held at Otaki – best of luck ladies.

Upcoming Events

Our next major event is the Ken and Rose Rigarlsford Tournament on Saturday 15th July. It is open to all members, with men and women playing together but for different trophies - the men for the Ken Rigarlsford cup and the women for the Rose Rigarlsford cup. Enter by adding your name to the start sheet on the downstairs notice board or by ringing/emailing the club.

Bathroom Update

On Wednesday the basins in the women’s bathroom were replaced and upgraded with new mixer taps and vanity units, organised by Sue McLaren and funded by the women’s club. Well done Sue – they look great.

And next week work will begin on the long overdue upgrade of the men’s bathroom, beginning with the showers. The upgrade will be staged to ensure there will be toilet facilities available for most of the time.

Bridge Update

The new bridge on the 5th fairway is now open. Carts should now use this bridge instead of the one in the centre of the fairway as it has a much smoother approach. Walkers can also take their trundlers across this bridge if they wish, but please note that the surface does not have any netting on it so please walk with care and stick to the middle of the bridge. Do not stand on the edge of it looking for wayward balls in the creek.

With the new bridge now open, we have updated our cart safety guidelines accordingly. If you operate a cart on our course, please print out a copy of the updated guidelines which are attached to this email.

Wednesday Club

Wednesday Club results for 28 June

The benign weather conditions still found the 25 contestants in the bi-weekly Par competition struggling to score well in the heavy Course conditions imposed by early AM showers.

Before announcing the results Chris Pearce extended a warm vote of thanks to David Ainsworth who by scoring the only Two of the Day at the Vets/Seniors Tournament at Te Marua last Monday won 3 dozen golf balls and had donated them to the Wednesday Club stimulating a round of enthusiastic applause.

The winner on the day with a well compiled +4 was Satish Chandra closely followed by runner up David Burton on +3. Those with –1 or better each winning a golf ball. Tim Allison was awarded the prize for the most exhausting round of the day.

After Acing the 4th Par 3 Hole last week and having to leave before the prize giving this week, Graeme Crocker was found to be nearest the Pro drive Sponsors Hole Pin on the 4th but it appears he took a few to get it in the hole incurring a substantial $3 fine – payable next week! Alex Lim on the 6th and ‘Nobby’ Noblett on the 4th scored Twos, each receiving a golf ball.

The weekly raffle was won by No 11 holder David Burton, second No 23 held by Doug Calhoun and 3rd No 3 David Ainsworth.

Six 9 Holers ventured forth – did nine and really enjoyed those Toasted Sandwiches etc.

See you all next week....Cheers, DS

RIP Brian

It was with much sadness that we learnt last week that long time member Brain Lavery had passed away. Brian was a popular member of the club who relinquished his membership earlier this year as a result of ill health and kindly donated his golf clubs to the Club for use as hire clubs. Rest in peace Brian, and may the greens up there be as sparkling and as true as ours.

Safety First

Further to last week’s reminder to take care whilst negotiating our course in the current damp conditions, it is strongly recommended that players wear “cleated” golf shoes to give them better grip on our sloping fairways and surrounds. And if you haven’t done so for a while, check the state of the cleats before you play your next round – they do wear out, especially over summer when the ground is harder, which makes them less effective. The cleats are replaceable, and our sponsors ProDrive should be able to provide whatever type you use. Note though that these cleats are usually made of hard plastic which slip on hard surfaces. As a result, please use the grated sections of our bridges when crossing them, don’t use stepping stones to cross our creeks, and be careful not to step on stones embedded in the soil when negotiating any of the creek banks or beds.

Happy golfing, play safely,

Your KGC Committee
